 Welcome to the May edition of the Protecting People Angus Workforce Learning and Development Newsletter.
National Children’s Day UK (NCDUK2025) will be held Sunday, 18th May 2025, which provide us with an opportunity to come together and advocate for children, their rights, health and wellbeing. With concerning statistics showing the challenges children face today, NCDUK2025 provides a national platform to highlight the vital work of organisations and campaigns dedicated to improving children's lives.
In Angus, National Children’s Day will be marked by raising public awareness and will include good news stories from our local services and how they support our children. If you would like to raise awareness of your service, or are running any National Children’s Day events, please send any detail to: ProtectingPeopleAngus@angus.gov.uk and we would be happy to share this through Angus Council’s social media.
The PPA Team will also be out in our communities raising awareness directly with the public and the multi-agency workforce, with pop up stalls, highlighting the “See Something Say Something” campaign. This campaign aims to increase public awareness of child/adult protection/domestic abuse and encourages Angus people to support anyone, who they believe may be at risk of harm, by seeking support from local services.
As well as this, there are also multi-agency workforce events planned, including Action Counter Terrorism (ACT), Trauma Informed Practice and Good Practice in DA. There is also an opportunity for you to come along and meet the Protecting People Angus Strategic Committee (PPASC) and find out about their role in Angus. (Please see below for more details of these sessions and the details of how to book).
Action Counters Terrorism (ACT)
Multi-Agency Awareness Raising Session
The UK Counter-Terrorism (CONTEST) Strategy was developed to address threats that Scotland and the rest of the UK face from a range of extremist and terrorist ideologies, groups and individuals.
Prevent, Pursue, Protect and Prepare are strands of this strategy.
ACT Awareness is a counter-terrorism awareness program designed for all UK-based organizations and individuals. It provides nationally accredited corporate guidance to help understand and mitigate against current terrorist methodology.

In our latest bulletin we share the findings from our research on the experiences of learning disabled women involved in selling or exchanging sex in Scotland.
I Am Me Scotland
Exploitation Awareness Resources (You Are Not Alone)
A suit of Exploitation Awareness Raising resources produced in collaboration with young people from Renfrewshire based projects and both young males and adult females from Polmont YOI and are based on real life experiences of exploitation including grooming, sexual exploitation, trafficking, county lines and gangs. In addition to working with the young people and adult females, we have worked with Police Scotland partners in PREVENT to develop a section of the resource to raise awareness of radicalisation, including extreme far right, Islamist extremism and other areas of extremism, such as Incel. The resources have been designed for use in non-mainstream settings, though will also be available to schools via the online education platform.

Domestic Abuse (Coercive Control) and the Law
This session is being facilitated by Marianne Osborne who has worked with Renfrewshire Women’s Aid since 2002, and who has a wealth of experience and knowledge around the area of Domestic Abuse both at a local and national level.
This training is open to all multiagency staff that work in Angus and Tayside, who have a working understanding of Domestic Abuse.
Protecting People Awareness Raising Session
This level one training is aimed at all multi-agency professionals, carers or volunteers who have a role in supporting people at risk of harm.
This session will give an overview of Child Protection, Violence Against Women and Adult Protection, supporting you to understand/identify when someone maybe at risk of harm and what you need to do.
This training is open to anyone who has a role in supporting people, within the Angus and Tayside area.

This session will provide a brief but comprehensive overview of HIV & Hepatitis C transmission, and how to reduce risk. The session will also explore HIV and related intersectional stigma. The session has been designed to support engagement with your team and service users.

This session will cover the knowledge required for you to meet and promote the standards around harm reduction. A one day in-depth workshop looking at Naloxone and the effect it has on reducing drug-related deaths. It is preferable you be trained to administer Naloxone prior to attending this training which is to supply Naloxone.

An afternoon refresher session, taking another look at Naloxone and the effect it has on reducing drug-related deaths. This training is suitable for staff who have previously attended training for trainers session (2 years ago or more) but would like a refresher.

Young People Online: Sex, Relationships and Technology
NHS Tayside Sexual Health & BBV Team are offering the above training to multi-agency staff and volunteers working with young people in Angus.
This session will cover
- how young people use technology around sex and relationships and the possible impacts of this, including porn, intimate image sharing and sextortion
- what the local and national data tells us
- what useful resources, activities and further reading are available and how these can be used to support young people in group and 1 to 1 situations

LGBTQIA+ Multi-agency Awareness Raising Session
This face-to-face training session is being facilitated by Under One Rainbow, who are a local Angus organisation offering a range of services to LGBTQIA+ young people, family/friends, and the larger community generally.
Under One Rainbow was founded in 2022 following discussions about the extra difficulties that young LGBTQIA+ people and their families sometimes face and the lack of available highly confidential support.
Safe & Together Bitesize Learning Sessions
Angus Safe & Together Champions have developed a series of Learning sessions they will deliver once a month to all staff in Angus. You are welcome to come to as many of these as you wish to.
The aims of the Programme are:

Graded Care Profile (GCP2) Tool
Face to Face Training for Multi-Agency Staff
What is the Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2)?
The Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2) is a tool designed to help practitioners take a strength-based approach to measure the quality of care a child is receiving, and support professionals to identify neglect, where this is an issue.
Neglect can have damaging effects on a child’s health, development, and education, and later in life can put them at risk of depression, substance abuse and even suicide attempts (Norman et al, 2012).
This training is open to all multi-agency staff working with children and families within the Angus area.
Roles and Responsibilities and Interagency Working in the Protection of Adults
Sessions take place from 9.30am - 12 noon at Angus House, Forfar
Places are limited to 20 per course so book early to avoid disappointment.

Scottish Children's Reporter Administration

This training is provided to any professional who may find themselves referring a child or young person to the Reporter or attend Children's Hearings.
Learning Outcomes include:
Providing a basic understanding of the role of the Reporter and the Children’s Hearing System;
Equip professionals to feel confident in fulfilling their role when interacting with the referral process and the hearing system;
Provide a safe environment to learn about the hearing system;
Provide a simulation of a Children’s Hearing, through a mock Hearing experience

IRISS CHILD PROTECTION PLANNING MEETINGS
A course supporting professionals to understand and improve practice in Child Protection Planning Meetings (CPPMs).
