Look out this summer for the launch of our ‘Census 2021 Outputs: content design and release phase proposals’ consultation. This online, public consultation will run for 12 weeks.
We want to understand your priorities and changing needs for Census 2021 data and analysis. We will be asking for your feedback on the following topics:
- The shape of the outputs and analysis release schedule
- Main changes to variables compared to the 2011 Census
- Proposals for feasibility work to derive new variables
- Population base specifications
- Taking a census during a period of change
- The release of paradata, information about how census data was collected and processed
We will be announcing the launch date for the consultation and supporting webinars soon. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact census.outputs@ons.gov.uk.
If you have visited the downloadable resources part of our website recently you may have noticed that many of the assets are no longer there. The following resources are still available:
Local Authority Partnership Guide - English and Welsh versions
Councillors Handbook - English and Welsh bilingual versions
Data security handout - English, Welsh and Welsh bilingual versions
Census 2021 logos - English, Welsh and Welsh bilingual versions
Although we are starting to see a decrease in the number of census scams, they are still out there. These scam texts threaten the recipient with a £1000 fine for not completing the census, or for filling it in incorrectly.
We are keen to protect the public from these scams and a reminder of our previous messages, with a new link to a Twitter feed, can be found below.
Please make your residents aware that:
- We will never contact someone by text in relation to the census unless you’ve texted us – our responses will come from 86677
- We will never issue a fine by text, phone call, email or social media
- We will never ask you for your national insurance number, passwords, bank account details, or your credit or debit card numbers
- Scam text messages can be forwarded to 7726 and scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk
Further information can be found on our website at census.gov.uk/your-data-and-security/how-we-will-contact-or-visit-you. We would be grateful if you could publicise this on your website or on social media. We have also addressed scams in a social media mythbuster series on twitter:

Well done to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tonyrefail in Rhondda Cynon Taf and St Alban’s CE Primary School in Hampshire, who are the winners in our primary school competition. Both schools have won new STEM equipment and the chance to announce the Census 2021 results.
The competition was part of our census primary education programme. It included 14 cross-curricular resources, teaching students about the importance of the census and how data can benefit their local areas.
