The information in this newsletter is for young people, their parents, and organisations working with young people. It provides info about the current offer to young people to help them prepare for what they will be doing in the autumn term
There are lots of videos you can watch and other activities which you can do just for fun, and that may help you into college, training or work.
Manchester Connect
Over the summer Manchester Connect will be working with young people, to support them in moving forward and taking up their offers for September.
As this can be a confusing time for a young person, their team will be available to offer help and support, find them something to do over the summer with their local partners and to make sure that our young people make the best start in taking their next steps.

Youth Task Force and Young Person's Guarantee
In June 2020 the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, announced his appointment of Diane Modahl as Chair of the new Youth Task Force – which will help to develop a Young Person’s Guarantee in Greater Manchester.

Youth Advisory Group - get involved
If you are 11 - 30 years old, you are invited to join the Youth Advisory Group to help shape the future of GMCA. The Youth Advisory Group will work directly with the Task Force Chair, Diane Modahl, and have a genuine influence in not only shaping, but creating the Young Person’s Guarantee. Black Lives Matter
The Youth Justice team have worked with young people to make this very powerful video. It captures the thoughts and feelings of Manchester’s young people about the Black Lives Matter movement, and includes a poem, written by one of our young people, which highlights the importance to those growing up in our city.

Government Support for Young People
This is a new temporary employment programme designed to help young people off Universal Credit and into work.
Young people will enter a work placement with an employer and the government will pay them minimum wage for 6 months. Employers will be able to top up their wages if they want to.

Call out to all of the education leavers (school, college & uni) from the Class of 2008 and 2020.....
#weneedyou is a new project to give the #classof2020 the advice, guidance, and inspiration to enable them to continue with their journey of discovery.
There's no doubt that this year has left a lot of our young people feeling let down, cast aside, de-motivated, and unsure of what the future holds for them. The #classof2008 were probably feeling much the same way when the recession dropped on them from a great height! So who better to give our young people a lift than the ones who have already experienced it?!

NCS Keep Doing Good with NCS this summer
NCS (National Citizen Service) has launched a countrywide campaign to enable young people, 15 to 17yrs old, to take an active role in helping the country recover from the effects of COVID-19, as lockdown begins to lift.
Young People in Manchester can now register to take part in social action this August, and pledge 16 hours of activity as part of the national One Million Hours of Doing Good campaign. You will gain new skills, help rebuild your local communities and create positive and lasting change this summer.
There are lots of opportunities get involved, including reviving local green spaces, supporting food banks, and finding new ways to connect your community. NCS are working with Incredible Edible, North West Air Ambulance, and Greenpeace and more.
Sign Up If you are between 15 and 17yrs old, (or previous NCS participants aged 18) can now sign up to help Manchester get back on its feet by visiting
NCS will then contact you with opportunities that are available in your area.

Skills Support for Growth offers you friendly support to help you make the right choices about your future career and achieve your goals, whatever they might be.
For young people between 15 and 18 years old, not in employment, education or training They will support you choosing the right career path, gaining new skills and building your confidence. Plus, you will meet new people and have fun.Support and courses available.

Throughout summer 2020, GC Education and Skills are providing a 4 week summer programme at their centres across Greater Manchester and St Helens.
Young people will develop maths and English skills, receive support with college or university applications plus, it is a great opportunity for them to meet new people and improve their confidence.

Challenge 4 Change Summer Activities

The Prince’s Trust and NatWest Enterprise Relief Fund
The Enterprise Relief Fund offers grants (and support) to any young person aged 18-30, wanting to find out more about becoming self-employed or setting up their own business.
Get funding to train and learn (for 16-30 year olds)
Development Awards can cover the cost of course fees, tools or equipment to help you achieve your goals.

Competition
The competition is for children and young people, between 4 and 18 years of age.
Create a piece of art which depicts what hope means for them. This could be a simple drawing or something more creative.
Parents or guardians can submit a photograph of the artwork over the next six weeks and they will be showcased on social media on World Suicide Prevention Day.
Following that, they will be choosing two winners. One from the primary age category and one from the secondary age category. These winners will have their picture of hope included within their Christmas card collection this year.

Apprenticeships
Our Town Hall Apprenticeships
Apprentices on the Our Town Hall Project will take up paid apprenticeships in a number of trades, and across the national apprenticeship levels.
The majority of places will be offered by our contractors, at Levels 2 and 3, Level 4 and up to level 6 (a degree apprenticeship.) Our scaffolders Lindens, for example, have taken on 16 year old Lucas specifically for this work package.

Sector Spotlight
Manchester's economy has changed over the last few months. Some businesses have had to close and may not be able to open up again, whilst others have been able to work, and even offer opportunities. Things may change in the future, but for now, we know that there will be increasing work in the Construction and Digital sectors in Manchester. If they continue to grow there may more jobs in these areas.
If you are still not sure what sort of work you want to do in the future, it is worth finding out more about what jobs may be available in different sectors.
The Construction Sector Might Surprise You!
The construction sector is strong in Manchester and companies want to find new talent. If you are over 16, you can find the roles most suited to you based on your interests, skills and qualifications, on the Career Explorer page (Go Construct website).
With so many ways to enter a career in construction, it can be difficult to know where to start! Go Construct have put together some information on the main routes into the industry, to help you figure out which is right for you.
A traineeship is all about preparation for the world of work. It’s a short course that offers you a chance to demonstrate your capabilities and enables you to build the skills you need for an apprenticeship or job.
The construction industry is trying to make sure their work force is as diverse as possible. They are very keen for women and people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds to get in touch and find out more.
After your research on the GoConstruct site, have a look on different construction company websites. Look around Manchester, you will see a wide variety of different companies who are working. Manchester has some big building projects which have just started or are coming soon, so keep an eye out for vacancies, and good luck.

Whether you are interested in the new university campus, or you want to find about more about the variety of work in the construction industry, it is worth taking a look at this short video.

Digital / Tech Sector
The digital / tech sector was growing strongly in Manchester before Covid-19. Many businesses in this sector have been able to adapt and carry on working.
Job advertisements for the IT sector have risen across Britain, after the UK government announced the gradual easing of lockdown in early July. There has been increased demand for IT professionals and graphic designers.
You can find out about the Digital Sector on the GMACS website.
There are all sorts of different roles available, and often you will see apprenticeships at all levels. You can usually find opportunities in Manchester, on the Find an apprenticeship website. Or search and find out more about businesses in the tech sector, and get in touch with them directly.
SharpFutures is a social enterprise that supports diverse young people into employment in the creative digital and tech sectors.
By offering a range of interventions including Apprenticeships, Work Experience and Volunteering, SharpFutures nurture the transition into work, whilst responding to the fluctuating needs of creative digital businesses.
FAST TRACK DIGITAL SKILLS COURSES From August 2020 SharpFutures will be running two separate transition courses designed to develop your skills for the creative digital industries. With a focus on Digital Production Management and Digital Content Creation the courses will give you the content making skills or the bespoke project management skills to work in this exciting and growing field of employment.
At the end of the bootcamps you will also be interviewed to join SharpFutures POD, which provides members with fully paid work opportunities to gain experience in the sector. Find out more about POD here.

If you want to use your time to learn new skills, there are a few sites which offer free courses.
Free employability skills - Learn Direct Learn how to find that job of your dreams, write a CV and covering letter that will get you noticed, and take the fear out of interviews.
Make it Click offers access to a range of quality online training resources free of charge. It is aimed at 18-65 year olds, who are in or out of work, and want to improve their digital skills. Skills Assessments The National Careers Service have free online careers assessments which anyone can fill in, to find out what sort of careers you may be suited to. Whether you are out of work at the moment, furloughed o interested in exploring other career options, you are invited to have a go at one of their short assessments.
Skills Toolkit The toolkit was launched recently, through the National Careers Service website. It is a platform aimed at furloughed workers (and others that want to take the opportunity) to upskill.

Gaddum Carers' Shine
Gaddum Carers' Shine is a support project for young carers aged 5-16 years old offering one to one support and a range of activities throughout the year.
They can provide individual support based on your areas of need, and access to fun activities and events throughout the year After initial support, offer young carers the opportunity to become mentors for the service, sharing their knowledge and experience to help other.
