As lockdown restrictions are starting to ease, you may feel a little confused as to what’s on and what isn’t. For sports and physical activities, the opening of facilities and places in the UK from 4 July 2020 excludes the following, which remain closed in law: bowling alleys and indoor skating rinks, indoor play areas including soft-play, indoor fitness and dance studios, and indoor gyms and sports venues / facilities and swimming pools including water parks.
From 4 July, you can continue to meet in any outdoor space in a group of up to 6 people from different households. The public can also meet in a group of 2 households (including their support bubble), in any location – public or private, indoors, or outdoors. This doesn’t need to be the same household each time. It remains the case – even inside someone’s home – that the public should, wherever possible, socially distance from anyone not in their household or bubble. We should take particular care to maintain excellent hygiene when using shared facilities like bathrooms. MCRactive are continuing to work collaboratively across the city, with all key stakeholders and sector leaders to understand the plans and prepare for future notices, with a priority focus on indoor leisure and the reopening of our gyms and swimming pools. We're pleased to join in with British Athletics to announce that the Müller British Athletics Championships will take place here in Manchester on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September 2020, with events now being held behind closed doors at the Manchester Regional Arena. The competition and regulations will be adhered to government guidelines for competitors and those helping to stage the championship. The championships will be broadcast on BBC 2 on both Friday night 19:00-21:00 and Saturday afternoon 14:00-16:30. CEO of UK Athletics, Joanna Coates said “we’re delighted to be able to offer our athletes an opportunity to compete and still become British Champions at the end of the summer in what has been the most unprecedented of circumstances for all sport.”. She commended BBC for supporting their sport under the Friday evening lights, and also to Manchester Regional Arena for their investment into the facility and working with them to stage this event in such challenging times. Executive Member for Skills, Culture and Leisure, Councilor Luthfur Rahman, said: “Although Mancunians will sadly not be able to attend in person, we’re delighted to be working with UK Athletics to enable the 2020 Müller British Athletics Championships event to go ahead. As a world-class sporting city with elite facilities such as Manchester Regional Arena, plus a strong commitment to encouraging and widening sporting participation, Manchester is the natural choice to play host to this prestigious event.”. We’re excited to welcome and accommodate the championship at the Regional Arena and hope for a healthy return for fans at sports events next year and to welcoming spectators to next year’s trials scheduled for 26-27 June. Event delivery remains subject to Safety Advisory Group sign off.

We're very proud to have supported three local Mancunians, who over recent months, have excelled with their commitment to their clubs and communities, and who have justifiably received a High Sheriff Award recently for their outstanding contribution. Majid Dar, Operations Director at Youth on Solid Ground, was nominated for adapting all their usual work to support their community during COVID-19. The organisation put together and delivered food parcels to families in Whalley Range and surrounding areas and have moved all their usual work online. The organisation has also organised video consultations so that young people can check in with staff and loaned out sports equipment to keep people active. Nigel Travis, from Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club, usually delivers ‘Fit and Fed’ sessions in school holidays for young people to take part in boxing training and also get a meal. Due to COVID-19, the club can’t open as usual, so the team have delivered almost 2000 food parcels to the local community. Mike Edwards, Youth and Community Manager for West Gorton Youth Project, has changed the way the team works with young people due to COVID-19. The team have been doing outreach work, undertaking socially-distant visits to children and young people. They’ve been putting together and delivering food parcels for those who need them and delivered sports equipment such as footballs and tennis racquets to enable their young people to stay active. All three nominees have received a certificate and will receive an invite to a celebration event once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

This week MCRactive are pleased to open the doors for their (very eager) original athletics clubs to return to both Boggart Hole and Wythenshawe. Following a successful return thanks to our Sports Team, both athletics tracks will now be open to the public to use whilst the venue and sessions will continue with all social distancing guidelines and latest government measures. Access will be by pre booked sessions only. All enquiries to find and confirm booking should be sent to Rebecca.Kemp@mcractive.com for Boggart Hole Clough and Rowan.Pymm@mcractive.com for Wythenshawe Park. We're thrilled to open these tracks, and to see the green-shoots of recovery as we take those small steps back to being physically active as a city again.

As part of our continued connection to Sport England, and their Join The Movement campaign, we have supported the launch and availability of their new live timetable classes for all who don’t fancy being active outdoors, aren't able to or simply miss the feeling of exercising in a group, helping residents exercise alone, together. We will promote favourite classes to enjoy in a front room, available here, to suit all ability levels, free and paid-for classes. This is continually supported by virtual classes on offer from our leisure centre operators across the city.
