This week we have featured a report from the Equality Act Review, with Afzal Khan MP for Manchester, Gorton, and a competitionfor black creatives age between 16 and 30; and we will continue to highlight any events, initiatives and news.
For now though, know that you are in our thoughts.

Over the summer they will continue to work with colleges, employers and local training providers, to ensure that offers are taken up, and young people start their next steps with confidence. As part of this, they will be working with providers that are offering summer programmes, so please get in touch if you are a provider and would like to work with them.
They will also be working closely with schools, to ensure those young people without a clear idea of what they want to do, have the opportunity to find out more and choose from a wide selection of courses and training,
If you know any young people who have not got a destination for September, please can you refer them, so they can receive one to one support.
To refer a young person to us, or if you are a provider who wants to find out more, please contact:

Changes to the city centre A section of Deansgate has already been part-pedestrianised, and Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter is now closed to traffic seven days a week. This – along with footway-widening across the city and local districts – will help people to walk and cycle more safely around the city centre, and help them to socially distance more effectively too. Extra signage has been installed to remind people to keep their distance from others, and eight uniformed, and highly visible, street marshals will work across the city centre to help maintain public safety in high footfall areas such as Market Street.

CEIAG Network
Manchester Youth Employment Group (YEG)
A few weeks ago we told you we were inviting a wider audience to read, and contribute to this newsletter. One of the main groups we wanted to include was the Manchester Youth Employment Group. For those of you who don't know who they are we wanted to give you an introduction:
The YEG is a group created by Manchester City Council, bringing together key partners from across the City, to support Manchester young people (aged 14-24) into work experience, training and employment with progression opportunities, including apprenticeships. The overall aim is to support the reduction of the number of NEET* and unknown young people in the city, and support the delivery of the City’s ‘Raising the Participation Age Strategy’, ensuring that all young people get the best start to their working life.
There is a focus on targeting support at young people within the City’s priority groups i.e. looked after children and care leavers, young people with SEND and health conditions, teenage parents, and young people being supported by the Youth Offending Service.
It is an opportunity for partners to network, share best practice, identify gaps in provision and share intelligence on these and other blockages to deliver positive outcomes for all young people.
If you are an organisation working on the same remit, and are interested in getting involved please get in touch with Pam on p.williams1@manchester.gov.uk
* NEET stands for not in education, employment and training

Manchester Adult Education
Careers and Progression/ Preparation for Work Update
Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES) has over 11,000 part-time learners, studying a range of subjects (up to and including L2 and GCSE) including; Maths, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Digital Skills, Child Care, Adult Social Care, Family Learning and Community Interpreting.
MAES works hard to ensure its learners progress on to positive outcomes. Throughout its programmes, learners are given insights into the world of work and have opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to secure quality employment.
Although MAES has a whole service approach to CEIAG, two new teams have been developed this year to drive the CEIAG message forward, : The Careers and Progression Team (to focus on 1:1 IAG) and the Preparation for Work Team (to lead on developing employability skills).
The two teams are working together to ensure that the strands of the MAES CEIAG Strategy, known as our Make It Happen Approach, are realised. To read more about what they have achieved download the Careers and Progression/ Preparation for Work Update.

GMCA and the Young Person's Task Force
Olympian Diane Modahl to Chair Greater Manchester’s Young Person’s Task Force
Young Person’s Task Force, headed up by the Olympian Diane Modahl
THE MAYOR of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has announced his appointment of Olympian and Commonwealth Gold Medal Winner, Diane Modahl, as Chair of the new Young Person’s Task Force which will develop a Young Person’s Guarantee.
The Mayor has asked Diane to lead the Young Person’s Task Force’s engagement with young people and to listen to what they need as part of the COVID-19 recovery process. This will include direct engagement with young people and youth organisations as well as with colleges, training providers and business. The Task Force will work with young people up to 30 years old.
The Young Person’s Guarantee will reflect those concerns and offer a blueprint for how young people can take advantage of the opportunities available to them, and how new opportunities can be developed that meet the wider needs of young people. We don’t want any young person to be left behind and want the guarantee to offer something for everyone. This could include education, employment, training, apprenticeships, health and well-being and digital inclusion.

#BlackLivesMatter Language Commissions for Black Creatives & People of Colour
Beatfreak Creatives have two commissions directly towards supporting work created in light of the #BlackLivesMatter movement for young people aged 16-30 from around the UK.
For Black Creatives They are interested in platforming ignored or under represented narratives, and particularly interested in capturing moments in different languages and cultures. You could:
-
Decide to attend protests, document and capture them
-
Interview family members or people in your community
-
Make artwork through poetry, visual, performance, etc
For Non-Black People of Colour They want you to open conversations in your community regarding Anti-Blackness. As individuals in our communities, Beatfreeks know this is a huge issue that they have been confronting with their close friends and families. They want you to make work in your native language that talks about this. Again, language is open for interpretation. Language as a form of communication or language as a form of delivery. You could:
-
Make social media banners in different languages to share online
-
Create flyers for distribution talking about this in your language (or multiple)
-
Make art that speaks to people who find it hard to understand English

National Youth Trends - BeatFreak
Take the Temperature: A National Youth Trends report understanding the impact of coronavirus on young people in the UK
Beatfreeks is a fast growing community of young creatives who have extended their Youth Trends research project nationally. The Take the Temperature research mobilised over 1500 young people from across the UK to share their experiences of the pandemic.
We really like this report, it is really easy to read and colourful (not like a lot of dry reports), you may even want to share it with some of your young people, as I am sure they will benefit from reading about the experiences and thoughts of their peers.
The Equality Act Review
Predicting Futures Examining Student Concerns Amidst Coronavirus Exam Cancellations
"Predicting Futures: Analysing Student Concerns Amidst Coronavirus Exam Cancellations”, is based on a study conducted in partnership with Afzal Khan MP and the Equality Act Review. Key findings include:
- 80% of students were concerned about their grades being predicted.
- 85% of respondents were from BAME backgrounds.
- 22.9% of the respondents expressed that they were worried about anti-BAME bias.
- Bias concerns extend beyond BAME identity to bad behaviour, favouritism, class, Islamophobia and learning style.
- Over 50% of students expressed concern about their learning style, namely that they work harder under pressure and have made progress since their mock exams, which is not accounted for by a predicted grade.
- The current grade predictions system does not account for learning style, mitigating circumstances or BAME bias.
- 80% of respondents were concerned about their future education and employment prospects.
