The Issues Around Newly Licensed Drivers

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America. Nearly 3,000 teens die annually in such accidents, according to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Two major areas contribute to this alarming statistic: 1) inexperience of young drivers and 2) issues surrounding distracted and impaired driving. Both of these issues need to be addressed in any reputable teen safe driving program.

Ford Driving Skills for Life – A Safe Driving Solution

Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) was established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs.

The program is international in scope touching not only the United States but many areas around the world.The basic premise behind Ford Driving Skills for Life is to provide a step in the learning process, providing new skills and information not currently shared with newly licensed drivers in the basic driver education courses.

Training is conducted in both hands-on and web-based curriculum and the entire program is available at no cost.Training conducted under the Ford Driving Skills for Life program addresses both the inexperience factor as well as issues surrounding distracted driving. Results over the past ten years of this effort have been outstanding. For best results, we encourage both teens and parents to engage in the instruction together.

Partners to this event include the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) and Family, Careers and Community Leaders of American (FCCLA).

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

National Ride to Work Day - June 17, 2019

Motorcycle crashes involving another motor vehicle continue to account for nearly half of all motorcyclist fatalities in the United States. Motorcyclists are inherently at more risk than motor vehicles because they lack many of the same safety features of automobiles.

From a statistical perspective, motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a crash than other motorists. NHTSA has a vested interest in addressing the types of motorist behaviors that pose a risk to motorcyclists. In years past, and enshrined in statutory language, these efforts have been bundled under the moniker of “Share The Road.”

Drug Recognition Expert Program

The Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program is a traffic safety program that focuses on the detection, apprehension and adjudication of drug-impaired drivers.

A DRE is a law enforcement officer highly trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than or in addition to alcohol.

National Enforcement Mobilization

The CIOT National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization is May 20 - June 2, 2019

In 2017 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives and could have saved an additional 2,549 people if they had been wearing seat belts.

Seat belts have been proven to be one of the best ways to save your life in a crash. Yet many still don’t buckle up. Worse still, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that will pass on to impressionable youth, who in turn will think it’s safe to not buckle up. The Click It or Ticket campaign focuses on safety education, strong laws and law enforcement officers saving lives.

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE)

ARIDE Classes are being offered free of charge through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) provides officers with general knowledge related to drug impaired driving and to promote the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DRE). Law enforcement officers will learn to observe, identify and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, in order to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes.

TIPS FOR A SAFE PROM & GRADUATION

April, May and June are the time of the year where high school students celebrate by attending proms and graduation parties. As these times of celebration near, it provides a great opportunity for families to have conversations around celebrating safe as their teen drivers get behind the wheel.

Keeping people safe on our roadways is a proud part of the State Farm heritage and who we are today. In Ohio, through our Good Neighbor Citizenship Grants we partner with nonprofits like University Hospitals in Cleveland to host events to promote safety on the road and encourage teens to make positive choices while driving.

Tips for a safe Prom & Graduation, and any time:

Parents

Connect with other parents - Speak directly with any parents supervising after-parties your teen will attend since some parents may allow underage drinking.
Talk about (not) drinking/doing drugs - According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving^® (MADD), 74% of kids turn to their parents for guidance on drinking. Talk to your teen about dealing with peer pressure, the dangers/repercussions of underage drinking and driving, using illegal substances, and contacting you for a ride in situations involving drugs and alcohol.
Offer options for rides - If a group insists on traveling together to prom and numerous graduation parties, talk to other parents about hiring a limo. That way no one gets behind the wheel. If it's not in the budget, offer to drive them yourself, or research other public transportation options in your community.
Have the party come to you - Plan your own, adult-supervised, drug/alcohol free after-party at your house, school or local community center.
Set the example - You can't always be in the car, but you can keep safety top-of-mind by demonstrating and enforcing habits like wearing a seat belt, not using a cell phone while driving, following the speed limit and driving 2N2^® - 2 eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel.

Teens

Groom before you zoom - Before it's time to go, take one last look in the mirror and make sure you're looking good so nothing takes your focus off the road while driving.
Get your beauty rest - Since many parties last until early morning, make sure you get plenty of sleep leading up to the big day, or ask your parents to pick you up so you and your friends don't have to drive tired. Fatal car crashes involving teens happen significantly more at night.
Set limits - Put a limit on the number of friends you ride with. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) , the risk of fatal crashes increases with each passenger. And if riding with friends, remind them to put their phones away and turn the music down.
Don't Drink/Do Drugs and Drive - Drinking before the age of 21 is illegal, and alcohol and driving should never mix no matter your age. This goes for using drugs and other illegal substances as well.
Seatbelts are the perfect accessory - A little wrinkle in your dress, tux or graduation gown is hardly worth not buckling up for. Buckling your seatbelt can save your life and keep you from getting seriously injured. Plus, it's the law!
