OHIO TRAFFIC SAFETY OFFICE PILOTS
DRUGGED DRIVING ENFORCEMENT PROGAM (DDEP)
In November, OTSO offered DDEP grant funding to county sheriff’s offices and police departments that have an established road patrol that conducts routine traffic enforcement and were awarded a FFY2019 IDEP/STEP grant.
High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) is a universal traffic safety approach designed to create deterrence and change unlawful traffic behaviors. HVE combines highly visible and proactive law enforcement targeting a specific traffic safety issue; in this case Drugged Driving. Law enforcement efforts are combined with visibility elements and a publicity strategy to educate the public and promote voluntary compliance with the law.
Agencies awarded a grant will conduct enforcement activities by Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) trained officers in locations and times that will have the greatest impact in reducing drugged driving fatal crashes. Officers will work in a minimum of two hours shifts between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
OTSO awarded 45 DDEP grants in the amount of $332,297.42 and will run through September 30, 2019. |
