LEGAL POT - CRASHES ARE UP IN STATES WITH RETAIL SALES

House Bill 523, effective on September 8, 2016, legalized medical marijuana in Ohio.

The Ohio Marijuana Legalization Initiative may appear on the ballot in Ohio as an initiated constitutional amendment on November 5, 2019.

The measure would legalize the use, possession, and sale of marijuana for persons age 21 or older in Ohio.

UPDATED OHIO CRASH REPORT FORM (OH-1)

To comply with federal guidelines, the Ohio Department of Public Safety has made revisions to the Ohio Uniform Crash Report (OH-1) for 2019. Agencies that are submitting crashes electronically, will want to ensure their crash vendor is aware of the changes. We have identified most crash vendors and provided them the programming guidelines. However, there could be a possibility we have missed someone. Agencies that submit paper, will want to send an order request to the Traffic Statistics Office no later than December 15 to ensure delivery is made prior to the January 1 deadline. The order form is available on the ODPS website.

OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH WEBSITE HAS GONE LIVE

The new Ohio Department of Health (ODH) website has gone live. This means that our stakeholders will need to delete any old links and recreate them. The straightforward way is to type www.odh.ohio.gov into a browser. Then you can choose “Know our Programs” and then “Alcohol and Drug Testing” from there we have links to resources and our calendar. We will continue to add FAQs and other resources.

SUPER BOWL

FEBRUARY 3

Super Bowl has become synonymous with drinking and celebrating, making roads on Super Bowl weekend dangerous. Using these materials, you can raise awareness in your community or with your officers to the heightened dangers of drunk driving on Super Bowl weekend.

These marketing materials should only be used in support of the Super Bowl LIII drunk driving prevention campaign period. Specific requests and questions regarding their use outside of this time period should be directed to Feedback-TSM@dot.gov.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY - DRIVE SOBER

MARCH 17

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th, and we continually see a spike in drunk-driving crashes on this date every year.

Use these [enforcement] marketing tools to reach out to your community about the dangers of drinking and driving on this day. These materials will partner your office with other States, communities, and organizations on this drunk driving prevention initiative:

A FREE 6.0 HOUR CLE TRAINING

The course credits to be apportioned as 4.5 general hours and 1.5 professionalism/ substance abuse.

WHERE: Ohio State Highway Patrol Training Academy, 740 E. 17^th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, 43211

WHO: Municipal and County Prosecutors and Law Enforcement

HOW: This course is being hosted by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office/ Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor/ Ohio Drug Evaluation and Classification program, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Funding is provided in part or solely by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Drug Recognition Expert Program

The DRE Program is a traffic safety program that focuses on the detection, apprehension and adjudication of drug-impaired drivers.

A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) is a law enforcement officer highly trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol.

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE)

ARIDE Classes are being offered free of charge through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) provides officers with general knowledge related to drug impaired driving and to promote the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DRE). Law enforcement officers will learn to observe, identify and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, in order to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes.

Reminder to all Intoxilyzer 8000 Operators

Please complete your annual proficiency test. Instructions for the proficiency test are found on the Ohio Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Testing website, under the Publications and Forms heading.

If you are unsure if you have conducted a successful breath alcohol test or proficiency on the I-8000 this year (BrAC result reported, no exceptions occurred), please do a proficiency test as soon as possible. The OAC deadline for an I-8000 proficiency is December 31, however the earlier the program receives a proficiency, the better. You may use any I-8000 in Ohio to complete the proficiency test.

Please remember to check your emails. A failed proficiency test will result in an email for the person or to their department if an email address can be found by ODH. Contact for Ohio Highway Patrol personnel will made through their dps.ohio.gov address for return email address. Troopers should especially check their emails for failed proficiency test.

STREETSBORO LIFESAVING AWARD - PORTAGE COUNTY SAFE COMMUNITIES

Mayor Glenn Broska and Chief Darin Powers were proud to present the department's Life Saving Award to Officer Matt Plesz and Officer Luke Nelson. Officer Plesz and Officer Nelson were the first responders to a car crash where the victim was standing at the rear of his disabled vehicle when it was struck. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and would not have survived without the first-aid and tourniquets applied by both officers.
