MARCH 15, 2019 IS THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT CRASHES INVESTIGATED IN 2018 TO THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY

Section 5502.01 of the Ohio Revised Code requires the Ohio Department of Public Safety to compile, analyze and publish statistics relative to motor vehicle crashes. DPS needs to make the data available for use by law enforcement agencies as well as other constituents. DPS is requesting the assistance of every law enforcement agency in Ohio that investigates motor vehicle crashes in order to have complete and accurate statistics. All crashes (excluding non-fatal private property), regardless of injury severity, that were investigated in 2018 and completed in a paper format must be submitted to the Ohio Department of Public Safety by March 15, 2019. We will be unable to process the data from any OH-1’s received after that date.

Please note that on March 31st of each year the Ohio Department of Public Safety closes the crash data file for the previous crash year. Pending crash reports and supplements received on previously submitted reports cannot be entered electronically or entered by ODPS after this date.

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th, and we continually see a spike in drunk-driving crashes on this date every year.

Use these [enforcement] marketing tools to reach out to your community about the dangers of drinking and driving on this day. These materials will partner your office with other states, communities, and organizations on this drunk driving prevention initiative:

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over for enforcement, or
Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving for social norming.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

U Drive - U Text - U Pay is a campaign centered on aiding law enforcement officers in their efforts to keep distracted drivers off the road. Distracted driving is a first offense in many states and continues to gain recognition across the nation as a deadly problem.

This campaign is targeted to men and women 18 to 34 years old with a skew toward women.

Use these law enforcement campaign materials to raise awareness in your community about the consequences of texting while driving. These enforcement materials do not focus on social norming - for those materials, please refer to:

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

National Ride to Work Day - June 17, 2019

Motorcycle crashes involving another motor vehicle continue to account for nearly half of all motorcyclist fatalities in the United States. Motorcyclists are inherently at more risk than motor vehicles because they lack many of the same safety features of automobiles.

From a statistical perspective, motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a crash than other motorists. NHTSA has a vested interest in addressing the types of motorist behaviors that pose a risk to motorcyclists. In years past, and enshrined in statutory language, these efforts have been bundled under the moniker of “Share The Road”

MOTORCYCLE OHIO CLASS - REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Motorcycle Ohio has a new mobile compliant registration site and can accept all major credit cards and electronic checks.

All students must pay a $50.00 non-refundable registration fee. No cash is accepted and no refunds will be issued.
You must present a valid Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) on the first day of class for the Basic Rider Skills, the Basic Rider Skills for Returning Riders, and the Basic Rider Skills - 2.
You must present a valid motorcycle endorsement to register for the Advanced Rider Skills.
Students may transfer to another class or assign their class to someone else (family member, friend, etc.). Both individuals must e-mail Motorcycle Ohio to transfer.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Rolling Stoned: A Crash Course In Driving Under the Influence of Drugs is a course designed to provide prosecutors and law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully investigate and prosecute drug impaired driving cases. The course is designed to encourage a team building approach between prosecutors and officers to aid in the detection, apprehension, and prosecution of drug impaired drivers. Attendees will participate in interactive sessions taught by a multidisciplinary faculty. Topics will include: signs & symptoms of drug impairment including identifying causes and prevention of addiction, drug impairment detection, and treatment alternatives, the Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.) process, the role of the toxicologist, effectively litigating and presenting a DUID case at trial, qualifying the DRE as an expert in court, responding to common defense challenges in DUID cases, and an hour and a half of ethics/ professionalism covering prosecutorial and law enforcement duties in discovery, trial presentation, jury selection, and sentencing recommendations. Attendees will participate in a mock trial exercise providing them with hands-on experience with DRE testimony presentation.

Drug Recognition Expert Program

The DRE Program is a traffic safety program that focuses on the detection, apprehension and adjudication of drug-impaired drivers.

A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) is a law enforcement officer highly trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol.

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE)

ARIDE Classes are being offered free of charge through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) provides officers with general knowledge related to drug impaired driving and to promote the use of Drug Recognition Experts (DRE). Law enforcement officers will learn to observe, identify and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, in order to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes.

MEDINA COUNTY SAFE COMMUNITIES PARTICIPATES IN THE 25TH ANNUAL MEDINA ICE FESTIVAL

Members of the Safe Communities Coalition had a freezing, fun time participating in the 25th Annual Ice Festival in Medina. The event took place over President’s Day weekend February 15 – 18th. The Ice Festival featured 94 carvings from local businesses, ice carving competitions, and the very popular fire and ice tower. Carvers from all over the nation participated in speed, individual, and team competitions throughout the weekend.

An excellent example of "thinking outside of the box" and taking the traffic safety message to your community. - OTSO

This event provided our Safe Communities Coalition with the opportunity to reach thousands of people from the community and throughout the state. Hundreds of traffic safety materials were passed out to attendees. The DSOGPO ice carving on display was a hit with visitors and many took advantage of the photo opportunity therefore increasing our total number of people reached. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.
