1. Important: Early Years Census 2019 – advance notice (Free Entitlement providers only)

As you may know, every year we carry out the Early Years Census for the Department for Education (DfE). This is a mandatory return. The Census is important because it is used to calculate the funding West Sussex County Council receives for free early education.

As usual, we need to collect child-level and setting-level information from you to submit to the DfE. The child-level information is collected, like we do every term, via your Spring actuals claim and the setting-level information is collected via the online Census form.

Please note, the Online Provider Portal will be open from Wednesday 2 January 2019 for you to:

  • Complete your Early Years Census Form
  • Submit your Spring term Free Entitlement actuals claim

Headcount day is Thursday 17 January 2019.

Further instructions will be in the Setting broadcast email on Wednesday 2 January 2019.

2. Free Entitlement Spring Term Estimate payments

Thank you for submitting your Spring term Estimate claims. For all submissions that met the deadline, payment will reach your account at any point during week commencing 10 December 2018.

You can log back on to the Online Provider Portal to view your payment summary. Please refer to the Estimate Help guide for step by step guidance on how to do this: www.westsussex.gov.uk/ecsportal

Please note that we will request your Spring term actuals data in January and further details will be sent in the Setting broadcast on Wednesday 2 January 2019.

If you have any questions, please email free.entitlement@westsussex.gov.uk or phone the Family Information Service on 01243 777807.

3. Improving The Home Learning Environment

Last month a new report into the impact the home learning environment has on children’s learning outcomes was published. The document was co-produced by the National Literacy Trust and Public Health England.

The publication outlines a behaviour change approach to improving the home learning environment and includes some very practical ideas that all those working with young children and their families can implement.

We recommend that all providers read this report and consider how you can implement the recommendations in your setting. Click to open a copy

4. Are you a SEND Champion? (Free Entitlement providers only)

Could you be a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) champion for children in your community and wider?

Integrated Prevention and Earliest Help (IPEH) have an exciting opportunity for three Early Years practitioners from each Hub (i.e. District or Borough) to join a SEND Champion programme run by National Day Nurseries Association in partnership with West Sussex in 2019.

IPEH have funding available to support work focused on improving access and securing sufficient quality 30 hours provision to support children with SEND.

Perhaps you have a project that you want to get off the ground? This could be the support programme you need to get going!

See here for more information about the programme and how to apply.
