Borough’s vision for the next decade launched
Businesses, community groups and charities gathered to launch a vision for the borough’s future this week, joined by our leaders.
The Wokingham Communities Vision 2035 sets out ambitions for the whole borough. It is the result of two years’ work by a community-led steering group of volunteers from the charity, education, businesses and local government sectors.
They have engaged widely with community groups and residents. The six ambitions set out in the vision are:
- Protecting and improving our places
- Making it easy for people to access the things they want and need
- Building and maintaining great communities
- Providing fair opportunities for everyone
- Economic success that everyone is part of
- Living happy, healthy and independent lives
Those invited to the launch were asked to make a pledge towards something they would do in their work or home life to contribute to meeting the ambitions.
The next stage for the vision will be to encourage as many residents, businesses, organisations and groups as possible to join the pledge. You can find out more on the Communities Vision website or watch the Communities Vision video.

Not long left to respond to governance review
We have been seeking feedback on the community governance in Wokingham Borough to ensure our communities are represented effectively.
Through local knowledge, we’re aiming to assess, create and make changes to the arrangements for the town and parish councils that make up our borough.
This may be a change to your ward boundary or how many councillors represent your area. The consultation closes on Friday 25 April.
Monitors help schools face up to air pollution
We've installed air quality monitors outside four schools in Wokingham town that are working to reduce harmful emissions from vehicle trips.
The devices are linked to displays that show a happy face when pollutants are below the World Health Organisation's recommended thresholds.
Above this limit, they show a sad face. They've been installed for a 12-month period, with funding from Defra and support from My Journey Wokingham, at:
They track nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, both of which cause a range of breathing and other health problems. As well as showing the latest levels every 15 minutes, the data is recorded to highlight long-term trends.
These schools are already working hard to encourage parents and pupils to walk, cycle and use public transport instead of driving, so the monitors will help them to track the impact of their efforts.
They also support activities which the pupils have been carrying out using handheld pollution monitors.
Volunteers to help keep councillor standards high
We’re looking for two volunteers to help promote and maintain high standards of conduct by borough, town and parish councillors.
The roles, known as ‘Independent Persons’ provides objective and impartial views on complaints about councillors’ behaviour.
They will also be a member of the panel advising us on matters relating to the potential dismissal of senior officers. The role would suit someone who has a keen interest in local government and standards of behaviour in public office.
Applicants should have experience of public sector organisations, good analytical and communication skills, be contactable during working hours (9am to 5pm) and be available to attend hearings or meetings at relatively short notice.
Meetings are usually held during the day. Applications should be sent in by 25 April, for interview in early May. For more information and to request an application form, email democratic.services@wokingham.gov.uk or call 07889 669359.
