Your electricity meter could be due to switch off
Businesses in Wokingham Borough who use the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) are being urged to switch to a new smart meter.
The service uses a radio signal to manage peak and off-peak electricity rates for older meters, especially for electrical storage systems and heaters.
If you have an RTS meter, your energy supplier will contact you to schedule the installation of a new meter before the service ends on 30 June. RTS is being switched off as it has been deemed outdated and the equipment can no longer be maintained.
Ofgem expects all energy suppliers to replace RTS electricity meters before the service ends. There is no fee for replacing your current system with a smart meter.
If you know someone who you think might have an RTS meter encourage them to get it replaced as soon as possible. If you are unsure if you have RTS equipment, contact your electricity supplier, who will be able to confirm for you.
You can also watch a video on how to identify if you have a RTS meter on the Ofgem website.

Public procurement - a guide for businesses
A new set of procurement regulations has been introduced, known as “The Procurement Act 2023” and were applied from 24 February 2025.
The new regulations change how public procurement is carried out. The legislation does not apply to procurement undertaken by non-public sector companies.
The key aims of the legislation is to:
- Create a simpler and more flexible, commercial system that makes it easier for suppliers and government authorities
-
Open up public procurement to new entrants such as small businesses and social enterprises so that they can compete for and win more public contracts
-
Embed transparency throughout the commercial lifecycle so that the spending of taxpayers’ money can be properly scrutinised and there will be better visibility of opportunities
What this means for businesses
A one stop shop for tenders has been developed called the Central Digital Platform. You’ll be able to find all opportunities in one place and you’ll only need to register your details once for use in any bids.
The Government Commercial Function have issued a factsheet which explains more about the Platform and how it will work: 20241029 CDP Factsheet v1.0

Cyclists needs from the ground up
A recent addition to the town centre shopping experience is De Novo Velo, your one-stop shop for repairs, parts and bikes for all the family. Located in Bush Walk, the shop is run by owner Max Knott.
Wokingham resident Max not only manages the business, he also happens to be Team GB’s Junior Team mechanic as well. Max chose the name because his store aims to provide everything the cyclist needs from the ground up.
De Novo means ‘from scratch’ and Velo, is French for bike.
Max is proud of this investment and adds "I’ve worked in the cycling industry for around 25 years, and I’ve helped a number of people set up their own cycle shops, but this is the first time I’m doing it all for myself.
I’ll be able to run it exactly how I feel a good bike shop should be run, and Wokingham is the perfect place to be doing this."
