Keeping our roads safe and in good repair
We've successfully completed our annual road maintenance programme for 2024/25 and announced a new one for the coming financial year.
We're still finalising the dates for this and will add them as soon as we can but you can see the list of where we’re planning to carry out work on our website.
In 2025/26 we’re set to invest more than £4million in resurfacing, working on more than 100 locations across the area.
Every year, we invest in our roads using whichever technique is most appropriate in each case:
- Full resurfacing is the most extensive option. This is where we strip off layers of a worn-out road surface and replace it with new material
- Surface dressing with layers of bitumen and stone chippings protects the existing carriageway by making it more waterproof and skid resistant. This can extend its life by up to 10 years
- Asphalt preservation, in which a sealant is sprayed onto cracks to prevent potholes from forming, can extend the life of the carriageway by up to five years
The last two are a safe, cost-effective alternative to full resurfacing, and are protected by a one-year warranty with our contractors.
Worried about a road near you?
You can report concerns about a road surface, but please be aware that not all defects pose an immediate risk and we have to use our limited resources wisely.
We'll always carry out any repairs that are needed to meet our statutory duties.
Big Community Switch deadline brought forward
There’s less than two weeks to register for the Big Community Switch, an initiative that helps residents move to renewable energy and save money on their bills.
The scheme uses the bargaining power of a large group to help secure lower prices and you will receive a personal offer after you register, which is free and there is no obligation to go ahead.
The deadline for the Wokingham Borough offer was previously Thursday 1 May, but this has now been brought forward to Friday 11 April.
This includes a free registration and acceptance of your personal offer, which will set out how much you can save.
There is no obligation to accept your personal offer and it is recommended to check other suppliers before making your decision.
Vulnerable invited to top up Covid-19 protection
Top up your protection against Covid-19 by getting vaccinated this spring if you are eligible.
Those at increased risk from severe illness can get the vaccine, including people aged 75 or above (on 17 June 2025), with a weakened immune system or who live in an older adult care home.
Most people only need one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine this spring, but some people need an extra dose if they have a health condition or treatment that severely weakens their immune system.
Anyone who is eligible will be able to book for an appointment, which will start from today (Tuesday 1 April). If eligible, you don't need to wait for an invitation to book your vaccine. Simply visit the NHS App, the NHS website or call 119 for free.
You may also be able to visit a walk-in site, which does not require a booking. Don’t get caught out. If you or your child are eligible, make sure you get any extra protection you need this spring.
We're in the running for national top spot
We’ve been shortlisted as Local Authority of the Year by the organisers of a prestigious national award.
The MJ Awards recognise excellence in local government and are run by the leading magazine dedicated to local authorities.
Wokingham Borough Council is one of seven finalists, along with Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole, Burnley, Lancaster, Stockton-on-Tees, Stockport and Watford. The winner will be announced on 20 June.
Our entry focussed on how we supported our partners to develop the Communities Vision for the borough, with its commitment to look beyond the borough’s image as healthy and wealthy to focus on helping everybody to thrive.
This follows us being ranked among the country’s most efficient and cost-effective councils by the MJ and consultancy Impower last year.
Whizz over to sign up for Bikeathon
Registration is now open for this year's Wokingham Bikeathon, which our My Journey Wokingham active travel team supports.
The event starts and finishes at Cantley Park on the morning of Sunday, 22 June, and it's free for anyone aged 17 and under who rides with a paying adult.
Participants can try one of four routes which are either 15, 26, 36 or 51 miles long. The shortest route is also flat, while the others involve some hill climbs.
There'll be local charity and community group stalls on the event field, including the My Journey team.
Founded in 2008, Wokingham Bikeathon is run by a volunteer committee. Any funds raised are spent on future Bikeathons or donated to supporting charities.
