Hi everyone!

Welcome to the our special edition newsletter. PPA are taking forward a Culture of Kindness pledge within Angus. This will be launched during a week of events which will also include a PPA conference.

The ‘Week of Kindness’ will take place from Tuesday 5 September 2023. The week will include various PPA topical subjects with a focus around kindness within practice. This includes a Leadership Summit, PPA half day conference, what is MARAC session, Stigma Workshop, Alcohol and Drug Recovery service ‘speed dating’, language matters and a few more to add. (The events will actually be spread over approximately 10 days due to partners availability).

We will also be making a promotional video throughout the week and would welcome everyone to be involved in this.

Exploring Stigma and the Power of Kindness

Both sessions are delivered by Richard Watson from and Debra Nelson who work with Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs. This is a national charity that supports anyone affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use in Scotland. Scottish Families were created in 2003 by families themselves who came together to support each other and campaign for recognition.

Digital Recovery Supports

Making Services More Accessible Using a Culture of Kindness Approach

Michelle Young is an Academic Registrar at Al-Maktoum College Dundee, as well as being a social activist. The presentation will explore health inequalities from a qualitative perspective, questioning whether an actual right to health is there and what are the barriers vulnerable people face when trying to access health provisions. This ultimately leads to the questions of whether in practice people experience early intervention and prevention methods and are health inequalities being effectively addressed and can we use kindness as a key approach to early intervention.

MARAC Awareness Raising Session
Monday 11 September 2023

This session aims to:
• Give a short overview of what a Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) is and how this operates within Angus
• How MARAC can keep women who you are working with, who are experiencing domestic abuse, safe
• How to make a referral
• How you can support your colleagues and team members who are chairs or agency reps within MARAC

An Introduction to Trauma Informed Practice

• What it means to be trauma informed
• Looking at our own practice and applying a trauma informed lens to the work we undertake
• Discussion around our window of tolerance and the application of this to our day to day lives
• Signpost to different resources we can access to support trauma informed practice

• Introduce the PANEL principles
• Demonstrate the power of adopting a Human Rights approach

Culture of Kindness Conference

Following our 10 days of action we have seen over the past 2 weeks the conference aims to bring all our learning together and begin to form Angus’ own Culture of Kindness Charter.

We will be exploring further what is a Culture of Kindness and how does this look in Angus going forward?

Guest speakers will include:
• Michelle Young, an Academic Registrar at Al-Maktoum College Dundee, as well as being a social activist
• Richard Watson and Debra Nelson work with Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs
• Angus Independent Advocacy work with lived experiences / partner stories /experiences

An opportunity to all delegates to contribute to the new charter and identify how we take this forward.
