Safer new speed limits coming into force
New 30mph speed limits on various roads in the borough began taking effect from Monday (30 June). These apply to parts of:
- A327 Arborfield Road, Arborfield
- Bearwood Road, Barkham
- A327 Reading Road, Finchampstead
- New Mill Road, Finchampstead
- Park Lane, Finchampstead
- Hollow Lane, Shinfield
- A329 Reading Road, Winnersh
- A329 Reading Road, Wokingham
- A329 London Road, Wokingham
See maps on our website for full details.
It'll take a few weeks to remove old speed limit signs along these routes, and we’ve delayed some of this to coincide with other planned works and reduce disruption.
During this period, existing limits apply until old signs are removed. Only Thames Valley Police can enforce speed limits and they know about these changes.
Once existing 40mph signs are removed, we won't install repeating 30mph signs in areas with street lighting, as the Highway Code (Rule 124) is clear that a 30mph limit applies unless signs say otherwise.
However, we will install repeating 30mph signs in areas where the new limit applies but there isn't any street lighting. We'll also put up temporary signs at various locations to remind everyone that a new limit applies.
New shopping destination on the way
The site off Nine Mile Ride Extension, previously owned by the Ministry of Defence as part of the former Arborfield Garrison, has been sold to developer Taylor Wimpey.
The first shops will be completed next year at the earliest and anyone interested in renting one should email Crest Nicholson, who helped arrange the sale.
We also recently gave permission for a neighbourhood centre with two shops, 18 flats and a public square at the nearby Finchwood Park development.
Cala Homes aims to start work on this later in the year. Both schemes are being provided under a legal agreement to serve new homes being built in this area.

Junction closing within weeks for new road build
Molly Millars Lane will be closed at the junction with Finchampstead Road until early September, with diversions for traffic. Residents and businesses will have access at all times, and pedestrian access will remain with some footpath diversions.
Traffic will continue to flow in both directions on Finchampstead Road as normal. Once Molly Millars Lane reopens in the autumn, there'll be further closures on Finchampstead Road until March 2026.
Pedal power can deliver the goods for business!
You might have spotted our electric cargo bike at last month’s Wokingham Bikeathon, which is part of a fleet that's available for free hire to local businesses.
E-cargo bikes are a cost-effective alternative to using small delivery vehicles, have a large loading capacity and don't produce any carbon emissions.
They’re a lot easier as you don't need to find a parking space and they can help you reach your destination quicker, without waiting in traffic.
Our Urban Arrow models can carry between 300 and 600 litres of cargo and have a range of up to 45 miles, with a top assisted speed of just over 15mph.
They have a lockable storage box attached and can be charged from the mains in about three hours. To give one a go, get in touch with the team.
Flying the flag for armed forces community
A flag raising ceremony at our Shute End offices helped celebrate Armed Forces Day 2025.
On the day itself (28 June), the Saint Sebastian Wokingham Band performed a free, one-hour concert in Peach Place.
The Borough Mayor Cllr Carol Jewell, Armed Forces champion Cllr Adrian Betteridge and Honorary Alderman Angus Ross came together at Shute End to fly the flag.
Every June, Armed Forces Day flags are flown across the country to mark the occasion.
The day is about showing support for the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, which includes serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and their families.
