Opening date confirmed for new supermarket
A new Sainsbury's supermarket serving Arborfield Green and the surrounding area is set to open at 9am on Thursday 21 August.
The 16,000 sq ft store will be off Nine Mile Ride Extension, near Bohunt School and Arborfield Green Leisure Centre, and will be easily accessible by foot or bicycle.
It’s also set to create dozens of jobs, with new part-time and full-time roles to be advertised on the Sainsbury’s website in due course.
There'll also be a drop-in at Arborfield Green Community Centre (RG2 9NN) to meet the team and apply for a job from 1.30pm until 3pm on Wednesday 9 July. No need to book - just turn up!
Look out for Council Tax scam
We're aware of scam Council Tax emails going round pretending to be from Wokingham Borough Council. If you get one, don’t click on any links and just delete it.
We do sometimes contact residents by text, email or automated voice message if they’ve fallen behind on payments - but only using the details we already hold for you.
Here’s how to spot if it’s genuinely from us:
- Texts will be addressed to you personally and link to revsms.wokingham.gov.uk.
- Emails will come from info@revemail.wokingham.gov.uk.
- Voice messages will confirm they’ve reached the right person before sharing payment options.
We’ll never use threatening language or ask for unusual payment methods. If you’re not sure, don’t respond and contact us to check.
Hear what people are saying about Solar Together
Are you on the fence about signing up to Solar Together? This is the tried and tested group buying scheme which helps you make the switch to generating your own renewable electricity.
We shared a Facebook post recently and here is what a couple of local residents and previous participants said:
"This is a great scheme. Our energy bills have dropped considerably since getting solar and battery through solar together. Currently exporting more than were using. And that's with charging an electric car."
"So pleased we did this 18 months ago. 14 panels, 2 batteries and bird proofing netting. Even in the winter months we are generating some energy and from March to October it covers all plus in the summer we are exporting electricity that we get paid for."
The registration window is open until Friday 8 August.
Saddling up in the sunshine at Bikeathon
More than 400 people enjoyed perfect cycling weather as they took part in the annual Wokingham Bikeathon last Sunday (22 June).
The community event, run by volunteers since 2008, offered four routes of 15, 26, 36 and 51 miles plus a shorter Kidical Mass route for younger children.
Lots of local clubs took part including Sprockets Cycle Club and Wokingham Cycling Club, and many businesses and community groups gave their support.
Our My Journey Wokingham active travel team were there to give cycling advice and also led several guided adult rides in the run-up to the big day.
Riders were given sustainable finishers' medals and cheered loudly across the line before enjoying well-earned refreshments on the event field at Cantley Park.
Proceeds will benefit The Cowshed, which provides clothing and other essentials to local people in need, whatever their background.
