Lunar New Year event comes to town
We're offering free parking for residents to join the Lunar New Year event which takes place at Wokingham Market Place on Sunday 9 February from 11am to 3pm.
The event is organised by Wokingham Town Council and marks the start of a new year in Chinese and many other Asian cultures.
The free event includes the Pak-Mei UK Lion Dance Troupe performing a spectacular lion dance, music, dancing, street food and much more.
Free parking
Visitors driving into town for the event can park for free at all borough-owned car parks.
Funding for this one-off offer was originally meant to support the Wokingham Winter Carnival on 24 November 2024. As the event was cancelled due to stormy weather, we've decided to extend the offer to an upcoming celebration in town.
People wishing to attend the event are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport such as the bus and train. Denmark Street will be closed all day to allow for the celebrations. Denmark Street car park can only be accessed from the old library side on the day.
Join call for better social care funding
We are backing calls for better social care funding and are asking residents to join us.
We believe people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems and other care needs will be under threat unless the Government increases funding to the adult care sector properly.
Increases to Employer National Insurance Contributions and the National Living Wage that were announced in the Budget will add an £3.5million per year to the cost of providing adult social care in the borough – but have not come with adequate funding increases.
This is on top of inflation increases over recent years and has left councils and businesses providing care to those who need it most facing financial crises.
To call the Government’s attention to this issue, we’re working together with the Berkshire Care Association (BCA) to ask for fairer funding for adult social care.
You can help by signing the petition on the UK Government and Parliament petitions webpage.
Enjoy a nature walk in our countryside
A monthly birdwatching walk at Dinton Pastures Country Park in Hurst is organised by the Wokingham and Bracknell Local Group of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The next walk is on Saturday 1 February, starting at 9am in the main car park off Davis Street and finishing by 12.30pm.
People of all ages are welcome. Advice is always available to help new birdwatchers identify the different species.
A donation of £2 per adult to the charity is requested, and children can join for free. Email the group for enquiries or more information.
