We’ll be reducing the frequency of this newsletter in the run up to the general election on Thursday 4 July.
Residents’ Round-up will go out once per week, sent on Friday mornings, until Tuesday 9 July, when it will return to twice a week.
During the pre-election period, there are specific restrictions on council communications. Key things to note for elections are:
Beat the Street is back to help you get active
A popular community game designed to get everyone more active by exploring Wokingham Borough is coming back this summer.
Beat the Street, run by Intelligent Health in partnership with our My Journey team, takes place across Wokingham, Winnersh, Woodley, Twyford, Arborfield, Finchampstead, Hurst and Wargrave from Wednesday 5 June to Wednesday 17 July.
The game, which is free to enter and open to all ages and abilities, sees players compete for points by tapping a special contactless card on “Beat Boxes” at more than 100 locations.
The boxes will be attached to lampposts and people can either walk between them or use other types of healthy, sustainable travel like cycling.
Anyone can pick up a free Beat the Street card from locations across the borough, or download the Apple or Android app if they’re over 13 years old, so it’s an easy way to discover more local sights.
Correction - in the last edition of Residents' Round-up (28 May) email newsletter we incorrectly stated the Mayor was first citizen of the borough unless the Queen or Queen's representatives was present. This is incorrect and the Mayor is the first citizen unless the King or King's representative stands in. We’d like to apologise for this error and any confusion or offence caused.
Cantley Park café to be run by familiar faces
A familiar team will be taking over the café at Cantley Park in Wokingham.
Cleverchefs have run three catering outlets at Dinton Pastures Country Park in Hurst for more than two years and will look to build on this success, opening to the public at Cantley Park’s pavilion from Saturday 1 June at 8.30am.
The café will be closed from 12 noon today (Friday) and reopen tomorrow. The café will be open from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 4pm at weekends.
 Annual road maintenance programme published
The road maintenance programme for 2024/25 has been published and will begin next Thursday (6 June).
There are three types of planned road maintenance that are carried out in the borough:
- Full resurfacing - an extensive treatment, which involves removing layers of a worn-out road surface and replacing this with new material
- Surface dressing - adds protection to the carriageway surface, sealing it from water while also enhancing its skid resistance. This protection can extend the life of the road surface by up to 10 years
- Asphalt preservation - a preventative treatment, which adds protection to the road surface. A top layer is applied to the road surface, which seals cracks and prevents pothole formation. This protection can extend the life of the road surface by up to five years
Visit our looking after our roads pages for the programme and more information.
Shape new community centre for Arborfield
Developer Crest Nicholson is going to reopen the former Ministry of Defence training building next to Arborfield Green Leisure Centre as a new community centre.
To help consider what residents want from it, two drop-in sessions will be held at the existing community centre off Princess Marina Drive (RG2 9NN):
- 6.30pm until 8.30pm on Tuesday, 4 June
- 10am until 12.30pm on Saturday, 8 June
These are hosted by the Arborfield Green Community Centre working group, which Crest is part of. They're open for everyone to give their views on how the building should be used and what local demands it might meet.
The scheme already has planning permission, and your feedback will help finalise the internal layout before any refurbishment starts.
Crest's team will be on hand to give a progress update and answer any other questions about your local area.
If you can't make the drop-ins, you can still share your thoughts on the community centre plans by taking a short survey.
