Liven up your summer with these amazing events
As the warmer weather settles in, we would like to remind you of some of the biggest events coming to the borough in the months ahead.
Whether you live in Woodley, Wokingham or anywhere else, there is a whole host to get excited about. Full details available for each event can be found below:
Take in nature with guided walk at Rooks Nest Wood
Save the date for a free Nature Day at Rooks Nest Wood jointly hosted by us and Thames Basin Heaths Partnership on Saturday 8 June, from 12 noon to 4pm.
The highlight of the event is a 45-minute guided walk with warden Richard from the partnership starting at 1.30pm. He will explain how Rooks Nest Wood was transformed from former agricultural grazing land to a thriving nature reserve.
Free wildlife spotter sheets will be given out to help you explore the meadows and woodland of this lovely green space listed on the Greenspace on your doorstep guide, published by our partners. You can also take home a copy of the guidebook for free.
The event is suitable for all, especially families with school age children. No booking is needed, just drop-in.
Help to commemorate 80th anniversary of D-Day
Wokingham
Market Place in Wokingham is hosting a special event to commemorate D-Day on Thursday 6 June.
The event, which runs from 9am to 4.30pm, is being organised by the Royal British Legion, in conjunction with Wokingham Town Council and The Barkham Hookers.
Woodley
Head to Woodford Park Memorial Ground in Woodley to celebrate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The event runs from 6pm to 10pm on Thursday 6 June and will feature a live band, entertainment and refreshment stalls. The Woodley Town Mayor will light a beacon at 9.15pm, along with the rest of the nation. Bring a picnic, your friends and family and enjoy the celebrations.
Arborfield
The Royal British Legion in Arborfield is inviting the community to come and celebrate from 12 noon on Saturday 8 June.
There will be family-friendly activities, live music, delicious food, face painting, a bouncy castle, barbecue and more. For information about tickets, visit the Ticket Source page.
Finchampstead
A commemoration evening is being held at St James's Church on Thursday 6 June.
Bring a chair and a picnic and join in the celebration from 7pm. There will be live music and a beacon lighting from the church tower, as well as cake and refreshments.
Have your say on Borough Vision at library sessions
Visitors to libraries in Lower Earley, Woodley, Finchampstead and Twyford will have the chance to help shape a vision for the borough next month.
The Wokingham Vision 2035 is being created by partners from a range of organisations to be a guiding document that sets out the sort of place they want the borough to be by 2035.
After significant engagement with residents and community groups, a draft vision has been written and the partners are seeking views on it, with drop-in sessions at libraries being one of the ways people can take part.
We have created a dedicated webpage for this vision on our engagement website, representing all our partners.
- Finchampstead Library, Friday 7 June, 10am to 12 noon
- Woodley Library, Saturday 15 June, 10am to 12 noon
- Twyford Library, Friday 21 June, 2pm to 5pm
- Lower Earley Library, Monday 24 June, 10am to 12 noon
Alternatively, you can take the survey online. A draft copy of the vision is available to read and our survey will remain open until Friday 28 June.
Prepare for adulthood with help from support services
We would like to invite young people aged 13 and above and their families to attend a free market stall event on the theme of preparing for adulthood.
This event will bring together a range of information and local support services, to support young people with special educational needs to explore their post-16 options.
It will take place at Woodley Airfield Centre on Thursday 13 June across two sessions, running at 3.30pm to 5.30pm and 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Services attending the event include:
- CLASP Wokingham
- Optalis
- SEND Voice Wokingham
- Wokingham Youth Council
- Representatives from our SEND Team, Preparing for Adulthood Team and Transport Team
More details and the link to book can be found on Ticket Source.
Restore your old items at one of these repair cafés
The repair café community in our borough is thriving. In the last two years, four repair cafés have opened their doors to residents, giving hundreds of once broken or faulty items a new lease of life.
All repair cafés are run by volunteers, who have only one mission: saving things from going to waste.
Check the dates of the upcoming repair café sessions, if you need to have anything fixed:
-
Wokingham Repair Café, All Saints Church in Wokingham, second Saturday of the month, 10am to 12.30pm
-
Spencers Wood Village Hall Repair Café, first Sunday of the month, 10am to 1pm
-
Repair Café at Lambs Lane Primary School in Spencers Wood, third Sunday of the month, 10am to 1pm
-
Woodley Repair Café, Christ Church in Woodley, first Sunday of the month, 2pm to 4pm
In addition, a new repair café is due to open in Earley later this year and volunteers are being sought to help run it. It is hoped the new café will be up and running by September.
