Shape the future of the borough and your services
We’re running several surveys and consultations at the moment so you can shape the future of the borough. Have your say on:
Park and ride sites revived thanks to grants
We’ve agreed to provide funding, through a Government grant, to relaunch a park and ride bus between Winnersh Triangle and central Reading from late November.
It’ll run every 20 minutes on Saturdays until at least April 2024. We’d like to extend it to weekdays as well, depending on passenger numbers.
Funding for this renewed Reading Buses service is time-limited, so it must become commercially viable by March 2025 or it might have to stop again.
We’re also opening Coppid Beech car park, off Oak Avenue in Wokingham town, so passengers can park near the Lion 4/X4 bus stops on London Road.
Usage of the site, which also has 14 electric vehicle chargepoints, will be monitored and it could shut again if it isn’t well used. Please make the most of it if you can.
The Department for Transport provided funding to support our Bus Service Improvement Plan. We published this as part of our efforts to cut air pollution and tackle the climate emergency.
The park and ride sites were funded by the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership and contributions from housing developers.
Donate now – reverse advent calendar appeal
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Beth Rowland is supporting her chosen charity of the year by supporting Woodley Foodbank’s reverse advent calendar appeal.
The appeal lists 24 items of food and other essentials, which will be donated to local people who are struggling with the cost of living.
Those who are able to take part are invited to donate from 1 to 24 November, with a copy of the advent calendar available on the Woodley Foodbank’s Facebook page or list of items for each day on our website.
Items include tinned goods, toilet roll, long-life items and festive treats, such as Christmas pudding on the final day. You can donate items to:
- Council office reception area, Shute End, Wokingham, RG40 1BN (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
- Woodley Foodbank, Emmanuel Church, South Lake Crescent, Woodley, RG5 3QW
- Marc Antoni hair salon, Crockhamwell Road, Woodley, RG5 3JP
Feeding thousands, cutting food waste
SHARE Wokingham offers fresh produce, like bread and vegetables, for those who need it. These are surplus stock from local supermarkets.
More than 2,000 people use it each week and it has saved more than 1,000 tonnes in food waste since it was launched a few years ago.
Food is residents top concern going into winter. SHARE can help you get food for your household if you're struggling.
Open to all, no referral needed. If you want to know more watch this BBC South news report about the organisation and its work locally.
View the food map to see SHARE's 15 locations and find your nearest.
Recycle more after Halloween
You can recycle your pumpkins easily:
- Put it in your compost bin
- Chop it up and put it in your food waste caddy
- Put the whole pumpkin next to your food waste caddy on collection day
If you've got a stash of sweets with plastic wrapping, remember you can now recycle these wrappers alongside plastic bags, crisp packets and the like at most supermarkets.
Read more about recycling plastics and wrapping. You can use the online Recycling Locator tool to check your nearest collection points.
Foil wrapping can be recycled too - if it scrunches and stays scrunched then it can go in your green recycling bag.
