Update on litter bins and grass cutting
We are committed to sound finances and protecting those who need us most despite the triple threat of rising costs, increasing needs and low government funding.
It was with these commitments in mind that we recently initiated changes such as the “taping” off of some litter bins and changes to grass cutting.
There are other savings planned for street sweeping, weed spraying and tidying of areas around bottle banks to make much-needed savings.
These changes were not fully approved via the council’s correct protocol and this oversight means the council will now go through a formal decision-making route.
The changes could make £100,000s of savings that will help us protect services for those who need them most.
Cheaper solar panels scheme closes soon
There’s less than one month left to register your interest for Solar Together, a scheme which enables residents to install solar panels and battery storage at competitive prices through pre-vetted suppliers.
Residents who own their own home or have permission from the landlord to install solar panels, and small and medium-sized businesses can register their interest for free.
The scheme will help residents reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy bills whilst supporting our ambition for Wokingham Borough to be carbon neutral by 2030.
There is no obligation to continue with the scheme once you have received your solar panel quote. The more people who register for the scheme, the better the deal will be for each household.
Join thousands of other Berkshire residents who have registered their interest by clicking the button below. The scheme closes on 11 August.
Marvellous festival this weekend - plane display
Come join the 20th anniversary of Marvellous Festival at Dinton Pastures this weekend (22 and 23 July).
To celebrate the occasion, the tribute festival's organiser will present an aerobatic display by the world's only remaining airworthy Hurricane, the aircraft that played a vital role in the Battle of Britain.
For this year's line-up and ticket information, visit the Marvellous website.
Contract exchanged to purchase care home
We’ve exchanged contracts with Four Seasons Health Care on the purchase of The Berkshire Care Home on Barkham Road, Wokingham.
Once the sale has been completed, and the home has been re-registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the 50-bedroom care home will be run by the council’s own social care provider Optalis.
It is hoped this will be concluded in the next eight to 12 weeks. With an aging population, the demand for dementia care in Wokingham borough is expected to grow over the next ten years.
By purchasing the care home, the council will increase the availability of high quality, affordable dementia nurse care within the local area, ensuring that some of its most vulnerable residents can remain locally.
