Wokingham Leisure Centre opens on Monday
The borough’s new flagship leisure centre opens at Carnival Hub in Wokingham at 9am on Monday.
We’re pretty excited. You should be too. It’s got swimming pools, a children’s splash pad, a health suite (sauna, salt and steam room), 120 station fitness suite, fitness studios including group cycling studio, a café and a dual-purpose hall for sports or 400 seat-cultural performances.
There will be some special membership offers in next week’s Residents’ Round-up – keep your eyes peeled.
Teachers unite for climate
Teachers from schools across Wokingham borough have come together for our first Climate Teachers Summit.
Delegates shared the work they are doing in their own schools, worked together to look at how climate can be brought into the wider curriculum and got information from a range of local services.
The learning is set to continue after the event, with a newly created Climate Teachers Forum, facilitated by our teams and open to all schools in the borough.
Teachers, our teams and partners came together to discuss challenges and solutions to the climate emergency within schools, as well as spark ideas and share best practice.
Delegates from 15 schools then had the opportunity to find out about support and opportunities across the borough. There were exhibits from The Tree Project, Freely Fruity, Public Health, our UNICEF UK child friendly communities programme and My Journey Wokingham.
Make your mark on new public art sculpture
You can make your mark on a new piece of public art for Wokingham, which will see your stories turned into a poem about those who live in the borough
The Arc will be part of the Carnival Hub site and has been commissioned and fundraised for by Arts4Wokingham, a charity aimed at advancing arts and culture in the borough.
Artist Nicola Anthony, who has created similar sculptures in Los Angeles, Dubai and Singapore, wants words and stories of the borough and its people. These will be turned into a poem which will be displayed on the sculpture – supply your ideas using the button below.
Preparing for the inevitable - climate adaptation
Extreme weather events such as the recent heatwaves which affected the UK are becoming more likely and more intense because of climate change. We need to adapt to this reality and plan changes to cope.
That does not mean we are letting up in any way on tackling climate emergency by reducing our own carbon emissions and helping others do the same – but we need to adapt as well.
Recently, we have started working on climate adaptation. This involves assessing the risks that climate change poses to the borough and preparing a plan to deal with them effectively.
Our work on adaptation will improve the borough’s overall preparedness to the climate impacts that cannot be avoided and that we are already experiencing, such as the most recent heatwave.
It will ensure that our infrastructure and economy are ready to deal with more extreme weather events, protect those who are most vulnerable to climate impacts, and preserve our biodiversity. We aim to involve our residents in our future climate adaptation work, to ensure our plans are reflective of current and future needs, and have a positive impact across the borough.

Welcoming new communities with open arms
Thanks to everyone who joined the Wokingham Borough Welcomes New Arrivals event in Wokingham last weekend.
It was great to welcome those who have come to the area in recent months from Hong Kong, Ukraine, Syrian and Afghanistan.
We’re keen to embrace the culture and diversity these communities bring to the area, so we hope to host more events like this in the future.
You can see pictures from the day on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
