Food waste recycling update
We're no longer supplying food waste caddy liners. This is to help tackle the climate emergency and reduce the borough's use of single-use plastics, as well as saving money.
You can continue to easily recycle food waste by not lining your caddy and giving it a rinse between uses.
Or you can line it with something else like newspaper, kitchen paper or any soft plastic bag that can easily be found at home, such as carrier bags, bread bags, cereal bags or fruit and vegetable bags.
We understand from a survey conducted last October that when it comes to waste collections, the most important thing to our residents are the environment benefits.
So, we've made the decision to stop supplying over 5 million single-use plastic kitchen caddy liners a year. It means residents will no longer get food caddy liners as part of their annual delivery of blue bags to residents, starting in 2023
Grants to support creation of new community groups
We've allocated £5,000 to support the development of small community/voluntary organisations in the borough.
This is part of our commitment to tackle inequality in the area and support the new, independent Residents Equality Forum (REF).
Any new and/or small community organisations/initiatives or an individual who wishes to form a community group can now apply for a maximum grant of £500.
This can help with things like developing their new organisation, holding community cohesion events, increasing education or employment opportunities of protected characteristic communities in the borough.
Eligible groups must represent the needs and aspirations of diverse groups or actions. Applications must be submitted by 12 August. These will be assessed by three representatives from the REF, with grants expected to be awarded in September.
Marvellous Festival returns to Dinton Pastures
The family-friendly tribute festival Marvellous is returning to Dinton Pastures Country Park in Hurst next weekend (23 and 24 July).
This year’s event features 14 world-class tributes, including Queen, Adele, Take That, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, ABBA, Santana and more, together with headline performances from The Chicago Blues Brothers on the 23 July (Saturday) and How Sweet It Is, a show of classic Motown songs, on 24 July (Sunday) evening.
To add in family fun, Happy's Circus will be coming back with two cabaret-themed performances featuring music, dance, and comedy.
The Big Kids’ Village, with its various fairground rides and free activities, will give children of all ages plenty to do.
The music extravaganza isn’t complete without some fine fare. Food stalls and fully licensed bars will be set up on-site to provide festival-goers with a good selection of tasty refreshments while they are enjoying the event. Tickets available via the button below.
New arrivals welcome event tomorrow
Don't forget it's the Wokingham Borough Welcomes New Arrivals event tomorrow at Elms Field in Wokingham from 12 noon to 6pm.
It celebrates the arrivals from Ukraine into the area as part of the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme, as well as families from Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Syria and other places who have moved to the area.
We're keen to embrace the culture and diversity these new communities bring to the borough.
The free event is run alongside our voluntary and community sector partners. There will be range of fun activities for children and families.
Those who are attending will be able to get food from stalls which will be available on the day, or bring their own picnics with them to enjoy in the town centre green space.
Trader ordered to pay £4,000
A man has been ordered to pay more than £4,000 by magistrates after engaging in misleading commerical practice.
Haydn Brown, 29, of Three Mile Cross, pleaded guilty to the offences at Reading Crown Court earlier this month. This was for offences committed while trading as “Browns Fencing” or “Haydn Fencing” between June 2020 and May 2021.
Three consumers reported Mr Brown as having quoted for fencing work to be carried out, requested and received large deposits and then never actually carried out the work following continuous excuses or not responding to calls or messages.
If you have concerns that you or friends, relatives or neighbours in Bracknell, West Berkshire or Wokingham, may be victims of trading related crime to contact the trading standards service on 01635 519930 or e-mail tsadvice@westberks.gov.uk. If a crime is in progress call 999.
