Free summer music events at Peach Place
Local music lovers can look forward to another summer of great entertainment with free Saturday music events returning to Peach Place in Wokingham town centre.
Organised with Beyond the Download record store on Rose Street, the events are a great opportunity to listen to some fantastic free music. It's a great time to make the most of the delicious food and drinks at the surrounding independent businesses.
Starting with the Skangsters this Saturday (11 June) there's a great line up of bands planned for June to September, including a special Festival for Ukraine event on Saturday 25 June, in partnership with Generation Studio, to raise money to support charity British-Ukrainian Aid
Dates of events include:
- Saturday 11 June – The Skangsters (7.30pm to 10pm)
- Saturday 25 June – Festival for Ukraine (2pm to 10pm)
- Saturday 9 July – Funkin Souled Out plus support (4pm to 8pm)
- Saturday 6 August – Siren plus support (6pm to 10pm)
- Saturday 10 September – The New Highs plus support (4pm to 8pm)
Give your views on tackling unauthorised car meets
We are seeking your views on unauthorised car meets to help give us greater powers to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Our online survey will run until Tuesday 19 July and is available to view via our online platform, Engage Wokingham Borough.
We are considering adopting a public spaces protection order in response to a rise in car meets, which often involve dangerous driving, rude and threatening behaviour and loud music.
From January 2021 to January 2022, 82 incidents were reported to us or Thames Valley Police. The most common locations for these car meets were at the Carnival car park in Wokingham town, the Mereoak Park and Ride near Three Mile Cross and supermarket car parks across the borough.
If the order is created, anyone who does not comply could be fined up to £1,000, or receive a fixed penalty notice of up to £100. You can find out more about the consultation via our news website.
Marking carers week
This week is Carers Week and events have been taking place to recognise and say thank you to all carers and young carers in the area.
Events have been running every day this week, with our carers services provider TuVida. This included a lunch at the Bradbury Centre in Wokingham open to all carers to join us on Wednesday.
A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older.
There could be as many as 14,000 carers in Wokingham Borough, both adult carers and young carers aged between five and 18; as people commonly don’t identify themselves as being carers, it can be hard for support services to identify and reach carers in need of support.
A recent round of welfare calls delivered by our adult social care team identified a total of 1,200 people known to us as carers, up from a previous 580.
The theme of this year’s Carers Week aims to address the visibility of carers and enable people to feel safe coming forward for support.
Welcoming refugees
This is Lisa and Chris - they were part of our Covid response team originally but have spent the last few months welcoming more than 200 Ukrainian refugees into the borough including more than 100 children.
Although you can’t be involved day to day in helping these young people like Lisa and Chris, we know many want to do something to welcome them.
We’re coordinating community fund-raising to help pay for school essentials like laptops and smartphones for these children who have fled war-torn Ukraine.
It will also pay for them to join sports clubs, social organisations (scouts or guides) or cultural groups like drama or music. There's less than two weeks left to contribute.
There's still a few days to apply to help in another way. We're recruiting six Ukraine case support officers to help directly refugees coming to the borough.
Apply on our jobs pages, with more details on salary and requirements. If you're not sure if it could be for you, find out more on being a case worker from our team.
What you might have missed
Each week we send daily updates across a range of topics to keep residents informed on what matters most to them in the borough. Here's everything from the last week:
