Crowdfunding for child refugees hits initial target
Our co-ordinated community fundraising for child refugees coming to the borough from Ukraine has reached its £25,000 initial target.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to almost 450 people for donating so far. Your pledges to Chance to Thrive will be helping these youngsters to rebuild their lives in our area.
It will be used for equipment for education like laptops, as well as memberships to sports clubs, social orgnaisations like scouts and guides and membership of cultural groups like dance classes and drama groups. Funding will also be used to help pay for equipment to do these activites.
If you donate we’ll send you updates once the funds are distributed so you can see how your help is making a difference to these people.
So we can help as many children as possible, the target has been stretched to £50,000 by 22 June. If you can donate to help these children fleeing a war, use the button below to contribute.
Green spaces praised for offering access to nature
Experts have recognised two public green spaces in Wokingham borough as havens for a rich variety of wild animals including birds, insects and otters.
Charvil Country Park and Charvil Meadows, which lie to the east and north of the village, were both designated as Local Wildlife Sites following a recent meeting of the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre’s (TVERC) independent assessment panel.
These beauty spots measure almost 42 hectares in total and are managed by our teams, with support from Charvil Parish Council, as part of Charvil Wildlife Reserve.
The experts also praised the high level of public access as the reserve boasts an extensive network of footpaths. Visitors can follow one of six routes ranging between 6.3km (3.9 miles) and 1.4km (0.9 miles) to walk around either the entire site or one or more of its five lakes.
Vaccine centre opening times this weekend
If you or someone in your family needs a first, second, booster, or second booster dose, you can book an appointment online through the NHS website.
The walk in site at Wokingham Library is also accepting walk-ins. Vaccine availability varies by day. This weekend it’s open:
- Friday 10 June (9.30am-4.30pm) - Spring boosters for over 75s and immunosuppressed people, and second (if Moderna was the first dose) and booster doses for over 18s (Moderna)

For those who want a vaccine but don’t fit into the groups above, use the national booking system which will book them at a site that offers the right vaccine, call 119, or find another walk-in vaccine site that provides vaccines to people of their age.
Awards nod for Dinton and school projects
We have been named as a finalist for two awards that recognise our innovative and modern approach to building projects. We’ve been selected in the Client of the Year and the Modern Methods of Construction categories of the Constructing Excellence Awards.
The awards celebrate the best companies and projects from London and the South East and this year’s winners will be revealed at a ceremony in the capital on Thursday 30 June.
The nomination for Client of the Year was submitted by Reds10, which worked with us on the expansion of Addington School in Woodley and the new Dinton Activity Centre.
Dinton Activity Centre opened at Dinton Pastures Country Park in Hurst last year and this project has been recognised in the Modern Methods of Construction category. It was Wokingham Borough’s first net zero building and has many eco-friendly materials and features, including solar panels, windcatchers, low-energy LED lighting and air source heat pumps.
You can vote for us in the People’s Choice Award, scroll to the bottom of the nomination pages and click on the ‘Vote: People’s Choice’ button to have your say.
