Good Afternoon,
As we reach the close of another academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared and to express my heartfelt thanks to each of you for your dedication, resilience, and passion for learning.
This year has been filled with growth, innovation, and collaboration. From new learning initiatives to community partnerships, we’ve seen remarkable achievements across our schools Most importantly, we’ve continued to put learners at the heart of everything we do, ensuring they are equipped with the skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive in an ever-changing world.
In our final week before the holidays commence, we saw last night, 76 young people receiving an award at our annual Leader and Cabinet Member Young Person’s Grant Scheme. This was such a wonderful celebration to really showcase and applaud the ambitions and aspirations of so many Telford and Wrekin young people. We had the highest number of applications and highest numbers of successful applicants, and I know many were supported to apply through their school or college. I wanted to say a big thank you for this and another big well done to the awardees.
It has been an incredibly busy year, with much focus on The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, currently progressing through Parliament, which aims to improve child welfare and education standards in England. The Bill focuses on various aspects of children's lives, including social care, school support, and safeguarding. Key areas include strengthening the social care system, promoting educational attainment, and ensuring children's safety and well-being.
The Families First Partnership Programme and associated Social Care Reforms are also ongoing and a significant area of focus within Children’s Services with 2025-26 labelled as ‘a year of transformation’ nationally. We will be working towards implementing the required changes over the forthcoming year and ongoing, with more government funding aligned to Family Help, Family Group Decision Making and multi-agency child protection planning.
We have also seen the launch of our Telford and Wrekin Children and Young People’s Strategy 2025–2028 which outlines a comprehensive vision to make Telford and Wrekin a place where children and young people are healthy, safe, and able to achieve their full potential.
And on a final note, to all of our students: congratulations on all you’ve accomplished this year. Whether you’re moving on to new challenges or returning next year, we are proud of your progress and excited for what lies ahead.
To our schools and settings and staff: thank you for your unwavering commitment. Your creativity, care, and professionalism make a lasting difference every day.
As we look ahead to a well-deserved summer break, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge, and celebrate the successes of the year. We look forward to welcoming you back with renewed energy and purpose in the new academic year.
Thank you again for all that you do.
Warm regards,
Jo Britton

Celebrations as school safety event wraps up 30 years of success in Telford and Wrekin
Thousands of school children in Telford and Wrekin – including 2,500 this year alone – have learned vital skills at a safety event which has marked its 30th anniversary.
Crucial Crew – led by Telford & Wrekin Council in partnership with the police, fire, NHS and charities – has this year celebrated three decades of equipping young people with the know-how to stay safe and well.
Aimed at pupils in Year Six, the three-week event at Telford College deals with the challenges facing this generation including vaping, knife crime, online safety and mental health, as well as road safety, the dangers of open water and effects of drinking too much alcohol.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council and Cabinet Member for Highways, Housing and Enforcement said:
“For 30 years, Crucial Crew has been a shining example of what we can achieve through partnership working. It's inspiring to see over 2,500 children this year alone learning essential skills in such a fun and engaging way—skills that will stay with them for life."
Councillor Paul Davis, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Civic Pride said:
"Today’s world brings new challenges for our children and Crucial Crew rises to meet them. From online safety to mental health, it is tackling the real challenges our young people face today. The energy from the children is amazing and it’s great seeing them gaining the confidence and knowledge they need to thrive.”
Pupils from Dawley C of E Primary Academy said:
“I really liked it when we did the fire station workshop and had to say what the dangerous things were in the house and what we can do to make it safer. I also learned not to trust strangers.”
“We went to the water safety unit and it showed us the dangers of drowning and how we can help other people who are in danger.”
Council teams that helped deliver the event included road safety, safer and stronger communities and public protection. Key partners who supported included West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, as well as organisations like The Royal Life Saving Society UK and the NSPCC.
Rachel Wallace, NSPCC Local Campaigns Manager said:
“It’s our first time at Crucial Crew and it’s been great to be here for the 30th anniversary along with other partners.
“We were invited to Crucial Crew to talk about online safety and our sessions involved talking to children about what they enjoy doing online and things they can do to keep themselves safe and if something does go wrong online, who they can talk to. It’s nice for us to be included and share those messages with children and their teachers.”
Crucial Crew is delivered by the Telford and Wrekin Community Safety Partnership with additional funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Almost every school in the Borough takes part, making it one of the best attended in the country

Hollinswood Primary School leading the way in supporting Plastic Free July
Hollinswood Primary and Nursery School is setting the standard for environmental action in Telford and Wrekin, proudly supporting the Plastic Free July campaign aimed at reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainability across the school community.
As the first school in Shropshire to receive the Plastic Free Schools accreditation from Surfers Against Sewage, Hollinswood Primary has long been a pioneer in environmental education.
This July, the school is building on that legacy by supporting Plastic Free July and setting an example for others to follow.
Highlights of the school’s Plastic Free July efforts include:
- Litter picking the school grounds and auditing the waste found, before separating it out for recycling.
- Student-led plastic audits conducted by Year 5 pupils to identify and reduce single-use plastics across the school.
- Reusable alternatives such as washable lunch bags, reusable cutlery, and refillable water bottles provided to students.
- Eco Committee initiatives that encourage litter picking, recycling, and composting, helping to instil lifelong habits of environmental responsibility.
- Educational assemblies and workshops to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of sustainable choices.
Susanne Bearblock, Sustainability and Eco Committee Lead at Hollinswood Primary and Nursery School, said: "Our children are passionate about protecting the planet. Plastic Free July gives them a real opportunity to lead change within their school and community. It’s about empowering them to see that their actions matter."
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, said: "Hollinswood Primary is a shining example of what can be achieved when a school community comes together with purpose. Their commitment to reducing plastic waste and educating the next generation is truly inspiring.
“What’s especially powerful is how they show that even small changes—like swapping cling film for reusable wraps or choosing refillable bottles—can add up to a big difference when we all take part. I hope residents, schools and organisations across Telford and Wrekin will follow their example and take action to protect our environment."
In supporting the Plastic Free July campaign, Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging residents, schools, and businesses to reduce plastic waste and adopt more sustainable habits. The Council is also working with local manufacturers and lobbying national producers to reduce plastic packaging and promote sustainable alternatives.

High Attendance Awards for St. Peter’s CE Primary School & Nursery
Data shared through VYED (on 10/07) shows that that attendance at St Peter’s is considerably above local and national indicators. On the day of the TSM, overall attendance for compulsory school aged pupils at St Peter’s was 96.9%. This is +2.1% on the national average for primary schools and +1.6% on the local primary figure
This is also the highest primary attendance rate in Telford and Wrekin.
Despite being in a very strong position, the Headteacher, Claire Medhurst, is not complacent and is determined to improve attendance further and continues to employ strategies to achieve this – the school uses EWO support to overcome barriers to attendance if they occur and refer to AST for legal intervention in a timely manner where appropriate.
We are very proud of the hard work put in all year round to achieve this. Well done to all involved in achieving this.

Attachment Research Community - Alex Timpson Awards
ARC Awards 2025
Over the past five years we have been supporting Telford & Wrekin Schools to develop and embed attachment and trauma informed practice alongside our partners in the Attachment Research Community. We have offered all schools free Attachment and Trauma training via the Virtual School as well as supporting them to become accredited through half-termly meetings, visits into school and a range of tools and templates to capture and develop their practice. This year we have celebrated that all Telford and Wrekin schools have become accredited at Bronze or higher in recognition of their practice.
We also have further great news to share. This year we nominated five schools for the Alex Timpson ARC Awards. All five schools have been recognised for their embedding of attachment and trauma informed practice; with the following three schools given a Commendation in the Midlands Region ARC Timpson Awards:
- Donnington Wood Junior School
- St George's CofE Primary School
- Millbrook Primary School
We were also delighted to see Woodlands Primary School win the regional Primary Alex Timpson Award and the Linden Centre win in the Specialist category. Both awards were presented at our Annual Conference in June. Congratulations!

Young litter heroes lead the way
Pupils from Lightmoor Village Primary School have been praised for their commitment to environmental action as part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s 2025 Schools Litter Picking Competition.
In just two hours, more than 100 pupils from nine schools across the borough collected 70 bags of litter, inspiring a wider borough-wide movement to protect green spaces and take pride in where we live.
The competition forms part of the Council’s support for the Great British Spring Clean, delivered in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, and encourages young people to take an active role in improving their communities.

Great strides being made on Addenbrooke House to create new sixth form
This flagship facility, which will be called ‘Telford 6th’, is being delivered by contractor McPhillips and is set to open in September 2026.
It will create a new modern home for the College’s A-Level provision and attract students from across the Borough and further-a-field due to its location at Station Quarter in Telford Town Centre.
Major progress has been made inside the building with mechanical and electrical installations being delivered across multiple floors.
Improvements to the building’s exterior are also going well with façade work progressing.

New RSHE curriculum published 15th July 2025
The revised RSHE guidance has now been published and comes into force on 1 September 2026. It includes several important changes that DSLs and school leaders should be aware of, particularly in areas that have attracted significant public and professional interest.
This is statutory guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) issued under section 80A of the Education Act 2002 and section 403 of the Education Act 1996.
Schools must have regard to the guidance and, where they depart from those parts of the guidance which state that they should, or should not, do something, they will need to have good reasons for doing so.
This statutory guidance applies to all schools, and is for:
- governing bodies of maintained schools (including schools with a sixth-form) and non-maintained special schools
- trustees or directors of academies and free schools
- proprietors of independent schools (including academies and free schools)
- management committees of pupil referral units (PRUs)
- teachers, other school staff and school nurses
- headteachers, principals and senior leadership teams
- diocese and other faith representatives
- relevant local authority staff for reference
You can download the new RSHE guidance here:

Annual Leadership Conference
Wednesday 22 October 2025
The Annual Leadership Conference for Telford & Wrekin Headteachers, Principals and CEO’s is taking place Wednesday 22 October 2025 from 8.45am to 1pm, including lunch on departure.
We are delighted to announce details of our key note speaker – Richard Gerver – one of the world's leading thinkers on human leadership and organisational transformation. Richard’s biographical details are included in the accompanying flyer.
The focus of the conference will be inspiring leadership and will build on the success of last year’s event, which was attended by virtually all schools in Telford & Wrekin.
The event will also provide an opportunity to share data on the performance of our schools across the borough, comparing to regional and national data, looking at trends over time and identifying hot issues. The presentation will include school performance data, SEND, CiC, Fairshare, attendance, exclusions and suspensions and will help to focus strategic networking discussions on the range of issues challenging our schools.
The Partnership Board is delighted to welcome all Headteachers, Principals and CEOs to this event. There is also some space for Deputy Heads to attend too, but we ask that they only attend alongside their Headteacher, and not as a replacement.
The delegate fee for this event remains competitively priced at £70 per person, with a discounted offer of £120 for two delegates from the same school, including lunch and all refreshments. The event is priced to simply cover costs and to hopefully encourage maximum attendance from all of our schools.
To secure your place/s please send a completed CPD booking form to cpdschoolimprovement@telford.gov.uk as soon as possible

Information related to inspections under the renewed framework
Text copied directly from Ofsted announces sector engagement programme to ready education providers for November start to inspections - GOV.UK
Ofsted has announced a full programme of sector engagement to be launched in September when the final set of education inspection reforms are published.
The programme of webinars and regional events will continue throughout the autumn term, offering providers a range of opportunities to familiarise themselves with the changes, ahead of inspections under the renewed framework beginning in November.
Ofsted will hold live webinars for different provider types across each education remit, setting out the key changes to inspection. Recordings of each webinar will be available on Ofsted’s YouTube channel afterwards.
- For the early years sector, there will be separate webinars for childminders; group-based provision; and out-of-school-clubs.
- For schools, individual webinars will be hosted for maintained nurseries; primaries; secondaries; non-association independent schools; University Technical Colleges (UTCs); special schools; and alternative provision.
- For further education and skills, there will be webinars for specific provision types, including 16 to 19 programmes; apprenticeship providers; adult learning providers; and high needs provision.
- For initial teacher education (ITE), there will be a webinar for providers of any/all phases of ITE, and another for providers of ITE programmes for the further education and skills sector.
The engagement programme will be bolstered by face-to-face and online regional events, hosted by local providers, local authorities and partners. These events will help providers build on their understanding of the renewed framework, supported by published materials. Ofsted will share further details about events in the coming weeks.

Changes to Asthma training for schools
Asthma training for all schools across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin will be moving online from 1 September 2025.
The Tier 1 training, which has been clinically and educationally accredited by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, will replace the training currently provided by school nurses.
The nationally approved course will provide schools with consistent training and flexibility where staff can complete it at any time.
To support schools and school nurses through this change, there will be drop-in sessions for people to find out more information or ask questions. These sessions are scheduled on 17th, 18th and 24th September at 16.00pm. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please contact helen.white12@nhs.net
The link to the Tier 1 training can be found here Schools Asthma Training The course is free of charge, with a certificate awarded on completion.
School nurses will continue to support schools and their asthma champions to implement the school asthma policy and the asthma friendly schools programme.
We would encourage all schools to join the asthma friendly schools programme. The benefits of becoming an asthma friendly school are:
- Improving asthma awareness and management within the school.
- Improving support to students with asthma, encouraging an inclusive environment.
- Supporting responsibilities for the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff.
- Ensuring the implementation of current and best practice asthma management strategies.
- Demonstrating the school’s self-evaluated status and commitment to Asthma Friendly strategies to its community.
If you would like to start the process of becoming an asthma friendly school, please contact helen.white12@nhs.net
Children and Young Peoples Asthma Clinical Network Education subgroup
I would like to invite you or representatives from your schools to join our Children and Young Peoples Asthma Clinical Network Education subgroup, who have been tasked with reviewing the current Asthma Friendly School Scheme process and accreditation criteria.
This is part of the work we are undertaking to support the delivery of the National CYP Asthma Care Bundle which is a framework that sets out the blueprint of evidence-based interventions to help children, young people, families and carers, to control and reduce the risk of asthma attacks and to prevent avoidable harm.
We would really like to work in collaboration with schools to review and relaunch this scheme, with the view to making it more accessible and user friendly for all.
We have set up the first meeting which will take place on 23rd September at 3.00pm over Teams. If you would like your school to attend please contact Helen.white12@nhs.net. If you can’t attend this particular meeting, but would still like to join the group then please contact helen.white12@nhs.net and we will add you to the distribution list.
It would also be useful to know if there is a particular time of day or day of the week which would best work for any future meetings, so that we can ensure schools get the opportunity to be involved in this piece of work.
