As we move into the next phase of Census 2021, we wanted to remind you all that we are still very keen to keep in touch with our census contacts at every local authority. The Census Liaison Managers (CLM) and Assistant Census Liaison Managers (ACLM) have been a valued and integral part of the ONS/LA partnership and we very much hope that you will continue in this role for some time to come. Your support with Census 2021 has been greatly appreciated.
We are keen to keep our existing contacts but if you feel that your LA's CLM or ACLM should now be with a different department, please let us know the new details so that we can update our records. We have webinars and future correspondence to share with LAs and are keen to get the information through to the right people.
Please get in touch with us at 2021Census.LA.Liaison@ons.gov.uk.
We recently sent you a bulletin asking for your feedback on the proposals we've outlined in the Census 2021 outputs: content design and release phase proposals document. As major users of census statistics it is crucial that the requirements of local authorities are known and understood. Please encourage your teams to respond to the consultation. We would appreciate you bringing it to the attention of relevant departments in your authority.
We’ve structured our proposals into sections to help you find the topics that you want to consult on. These include:
- The shape of the outputs and analysis release schedule
- Main changes to variables compared to the 2011 Census
- Proposals for feasibility work to derive new variables
- Population-base specifications
- Taking a census during a period of change
- Paradata - information about how census data was collected and processed
You can find detailed information about the consultation, as well as supporting documentation providing context for the questions we’re asking, on Citizen Space, the ONS’s consultation platform.
How to take part
The consultation will remain open until midnight on 5 October 2021.
We recommend you respond to the consultation in our online questionnaire.
Other ways of responding are available. For example, you can download a Word version of the questionnaire from Citizen Space and email your response to census.outputs@ons.gov.uk.
We'll publish our response to users' feedback this winter.
The response to the coronavirus pandemic has been driven by data. Never before have statistics been so crucial in informing decisions that affect us all.
Pete Benton, Director of 2021 Census Operations, explains how the ONS will be maximising the value of the data collected from Census 2021 and how it aims to provide ever more timely statistics moving forwards.

From inside toilets to home ownership, the recently digitised data from the 1961 Census Small Area Statistics can show changes in detail at a local level for the first time.
Interactive maps help users compare different areas to see how people's lives have changed in the 50 years up to 2011.
