ONS have been in discussion with Cabinet Office and the regulations have been changed. We’re pleased to say this means we can now open some (but not all) sites in England.
ONS and Good Things Foundation are working through the details at the moment. The opening of any centre will be subject to individual site risk assessments.
We will update you as soon as we have more details (including on centres in Wales) and we will also put information on individual sites’ opening arrangements here: https://census.gov.uk/help/find-a-census-support-centre
Our website provides plenty of information to support students with completion of their census. It states:
Wherever you’re currently staying, from halls to your old bedroom at home, you should fill in a census for your university address.
If you return to a permanent home address out of term-time, you should also be included on the census for that household.
You may be staying at home temporarily due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. You should still complete the census for your university address.
If you’re not going to return to your university address, you only need to be included on the census for your permanent home address.
More information can be found on the student pages.
We have a number of iconic buildings lighting up purple from 20:21 on Friday 19 March until Sunday night. We are encouraging these flagship buildings to turn their purple lights on over census weekend to create a visual spectacular and highlight the importance of the census to the entire nation.
Your local census engagement managers will be in touch (if they haven't already) to work with councils to try and make this a huge success across England and Wales.
If you don’t receive any information (press releases) by the middle of next week – get in touch with media.relations@ons.gov.uk
To celebrate the 22nd census we have awarded 22 purple plaques to local unsung heroes who have made significant contributions to their community. They come from all walks of life and span the different regions of England and Wales. These are ordinary people who have made extraordinary contributions from supporting those with mental health issues to volunteering during the pandemic.
The winners were chosen by a judging panel of Joanna Page, Imran Hameed, Deborah Okenla and Delwyn Derrick. Joanna appeared on the BBC One Breakfast Show this week to talk about the awards.
Each hero has received a purple plaque and you can see the full list of winners here.

Content calendars have now been updated to the end of March. Please get in touch with your CEM who will be able to provide you with the visuals.
Thank you to all local authorities who are continuing to promote Census 2021 through their social media channels. 322 local authorities have now mentioned census on social media, reaching an audience of approximately 25 million users. This is a huge increase in audience numbers from last week.
If you still haven't reached out to your local communities on social media, these are the channels we are using:
You can find a pack of social media posts and images to use on our downloadable resources page. These resources can be adapted to suit your local areas. Please note, if you require rural images please speak to your CEM.
Thank you to all local authorities who ordered 2nd phase posters and leaflets from us. In total, we have sent 30,000 posters and 125,000 leaflets. These have started to arrive at your nominated addresses. Please remember that these assets are relevant for the duration of the campaign which continues long after 21 March and should remain on display for as long as possible to remind people to complete their census.
This week saw the last of our 'pre' Census Day workshops for local authorities. Aimed at LA communication staff it provided an in depth look at the 2nd comms toolkit (link is available in the pink bar at the top right of this newsletter).
We have now run 11 workshops focussing on the nine strands of partnership activity. Subject specialists have delivered at each workshop and attendees were given the opportunity to ask general census questions as well as more workshop specific questions.
Thank you to everyone who has attended any of our events. We are pleased to announce that 90% of LAs attended at least one workshop and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
We hope to run some more workshops after Census Day looking at outputs and will let you know about these in our newsletters.
It is fantastic to see so many of your websites dedicating a page to Census 2021. Over 75% of LAs have already provided their local residents with a link but we are hoping that this number will increase.
If you haven't already done so, please consider signposting users of your website to census.gov.uk, census.gov.uk/help/find-a-census-support-centre or our contact centre numbers (see below).
