DHSC send thanks for Shared Lives carers supportÂ
The Department of Heath and Social Care (DHSC) recently wrote to our Shared Lives team to pass their thanks to Alex (carer) and Liam, pictured here. Alex and Liam took part in a photo shoot to support the DHSC's national recruitment campaign 'Every Day is Different'.
The campaign featured Alex and Liam on social media and their photographs were displayed at the Houses of Parliament. They have also agreed to be part of the second wave of the campaign later this year. The DHSC are using Alex and Liam's case study to encourage more people to share their story.
Alex gave the DHSC her views: "The campaign was a great opportunity for Liam and myself to show how Shared Lives has enriched our lives. It was a great honour to be asked to be part of the campaign. The photo shoot was fab and the photographer quickly put us at ease and soon had us laughing and enjoying every minute of it. Being a Shared Lives carer is a fabulously wonderful job. Opening up your home to young adults with a disability enables them to live an independent life as much as possible. I couldn't do that for Liam without Shared Lives, and for that we are both extremely grateful."

Appreciation for support to revive vandalised gardens
Bankfields Garden in Workington is maintained by people with learning disabilities and enjoyed by the local community, schools and residential homes.
They have recently had a number of vandalism attacks while awaiting the judging of Cumbria in Bloom 2019. Following the attacks they have received donations and support from various people, schools and the community and would like pass on their thanks.
|
All at Bankfields Garden would like to say a big thank you to:
- The Community Nursing Team who raised ÂŁ230.01 by holding a coffee morning and cake sale and all the businesses who kindly donated cakes and tray bakes from Cockermouth as follows:
- Veeva
- The Norham House
- Wild Zuccinis
- Julie’s Sandwich Shop
- West Lakes Academy – The student’s school garden group in Egremont who donated ÂŁ20.00 Â
- Lakes College and Age Concern donation of bird boxes.
- The local dog walkers and local community that keep a watchful eye on the gardens in the evenings and over the weekends due to mindless vandalism, which they have experienced recently.
All the help and support is greatly valued. Staff at Bankfields Garden would like to encourage people to pay them a visit to see and enjoy the wonderful garden.

Cumbria Police launch new domestic abuse campaign
We are supporting a new Cumbria Police campaign to show domestic abuse (DA) the red card. These crimes impact many people across the county and we want to help bring an end to the suffering.
Cumbria Police are linking up with Carlisle United, the Cumberland FA and the wider Cumbria football community to send the message that DA is not to be tolerated. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the support available for victims. Picture shows representatives from Cumbria Constabulary, Carlisle United and the Cumberland Football Association.
As part of the campaign, Cumbria Police are running a competition with the Cumberland FA where amateur teams across the county are invited to post pictures (using the #UnitedAgainstAbuse hashtag) of their players wearing a red stripe on their face during matches/training – this is inspired by a campaign ran in Italy where footballers sported this mark to raise awareness of violence to women. The winners will win a kit which will be branded up with the campaign message.

New independent organisation formed to help those affected by suicide in Cumbria
A new independent organisation has been created for Cumbria to extend and strengthen the support available to people who have been bereaved by suicide.
Suicide Bereavement Support (SBS) aims to support local people by using local resources whilst continuing to work in partnership with national colleague and local agencies. The organisation will cover Cumbria, south Scotland and north Lancashire.
Colin Cox, Director of Public Health at Cumbria County Council, said: “I very much welcome the establishment of Suicide Bereavement Support. Cumbria has a higher rate of suicide than the national average, and every death by suicide has a huge impact on family, friends and the wider community. The volunteers are experts through personal experience and I know that as the group develops further they will continue to be an important part of the Cumbrian approach to preventing suicide and supporting those affected by it.”
