📬 NC NEW(s) Librarian Vol 12 | Evaluations & Professional Portfolio

NCDPI Bulletin Header

Welcome! This is a virtual/hybrid support network for NC Librarians with
a focus on those newly entering the field, or any SLMC seeking new ideas & connections.

In 2023-24, I'm trying something different. Each month, a new page will be added to the Canva resource, so all the information is in one place. You'll receive a reminder email via 📬 NCPublicSchools@public.govdelivery.com & a text-friendly version. Additional special bulletins or events may also be announced via GovDelivery so be sure to have that email address approved for your subscribed email inbox.

This month's theme includes content on our evaluation instrument and professional portfolios. Additionally, check out the notes & resources I've brought back from my trip to #AASL23! There is also a "Lightbulb moment" link to access a free ISTE U mini-course.

The aim is to share good ideas across the state, and to cultivate a community so please consider participating on the Padlet this month to share your own resources on evaluations and professional portfolios.

If you have something you'd like to feature from your library/team, please reach out via email!

You have a few ways to explore this volume 12 of the NC NEW(s) Librarian:

1️⃣ Scroll down for a text-friendly version! Graphics & links still included but you don't have to navigate fonts, colors, or too many graphics

2️⃣ Click over to Canva | This will be a growing resource w/ new slides added monthly

3️⃣ Open the PDF for offline viewing

Got this as a forward? Be sure to sign up to get it delivered right to you in the future!

Preparing for an evaluation:

With the school year well under way, you’ve probably completed the PDP by now, done your self-evaluation, and perhaps already hosted an administrator for your first official observation! Whether you’re coming from a classroom & have been observed before, or this is your first time having a formal observation... it can be nerve-wracking! This month’s topic includes resources to understand your evaluation instrument, and tips for building a professional portfolio to help you communicate what you do beyond that quick drop-in observation.

1. Know Your Rubric

Might seem obvious, but take time to read through and ask questions to your peers, mentor, or even admin, for any components you’re unsure of.

2. Collect Artifacts

You have a unique role, much of which can’t be observed in a typical visit where an evaluator stops by to see you teach. Keep a running record of evidence of your work like the document shared by Stacey Hanf (below).

3. Advocate

In the post-observation discussion, if components are marked “not observed” or lower than you expected, ask how you can provide data, or focus on that as a goal before your next observation.

If you're needing a deeper dive into the evaluation rubric and how it's used, check out:

and

This YouTube Webcast by DTL Consultant, Kathy Parker, is perfect for those new to the rubric. It was recorded in 2016, so some of the website content has been updated since, however the rubric & examples are still current.

Do you have an artifact document, professional portfolio, or evaluation resource you’re willing to share with fellow NC librarians?

Mollee's Learnings from AASL23

Notes from AASL!

Attending the American Association of School Libraries national conference in Tampa, October 18-21 was an incredible learning & growth experience, and I wanted to capture my notes & learnings to share with you all here back in NC. You can view these over on Canva, by clicking the "Notes from AASL link" above, or the image below.

If the controls get in the way of viewing any content, you can click the "..." on the bottom right and toggle off the controls. You can still navigate using the arrows on your keyboard or clicking on the right or left of the slide.
