📬 NC NEW(s) Librarian Vol 10 |2023-24 Back to School!

NCDPI Bulletin Header

The 2023-24 School Year has officially kicked off and with it, a new year for the NC NEW(s) Librarian 101 newsletter.

Welcome! This is a virtual/hybrid support network for NC Librarians with
a focus on those newly entering the field, or any SLMC seeking new ideas & connections.

In 2023-24, I'm trying something different. Each month, a new page will be added to the Canva resource, so all the information is in one place. You'll receive a reminder email via 📬 NCPublicSchools@public.govdelivery.com & a text-friendly version. Additional special bulletins or events may also be announced via GovDelivery so be sure to have that email address approved for your subscribed email inbox.

Expect fresh content around a theme, with each volume that comes directly from practicing librarians!

There will be lesson and activity examples, resource links to explore, and curated content like the "Lightbulb moment" quick PD. Topics planned for this year include Portfolios + Evaluations, Literacy programming + Clubs, Library Design + Browsability, and more. The aim is to share good ideas across the state, and to cultivate a community so please consider participating on the Flip and Padlet that will be an ongoing place to add ideas, share additional content, and connect. If you have something you'd like to feature from your library/team, please reach out via email!

You have a few ways to explore this volume 10 of the NC NEW(s) Librarian:

1️⃣ Scroll down for a text-friendly version! Graphics & links still included but you don't have to navigate fonts, colors, or too many graphics

2️⃣ Click over to Canvas | This will be a growing resource w/ new slides added monthly

3️⃣ Open the PDF for offline viewing

Got this as a forward? Be sure to sign up to get it delivered right to you in the future!

Looking for ideas to welcome students back to your library? Check out what 2 new librarians are doing:

To introduce herself & kick off celebrating reading this year in her library, new elementary SLMC Laura Daniels will stand at the door with a basket of some of her favorite books to hand to every K-5 student as they walk in. Then, to teach about choice, borrowing, and the idea that there's a book for every student in the library, students will explore the book they were handed, then head to the updated, highly-browsable shelves to find something that makes them excited to read.

Headshot of Laura Daniels

Hi! I'm Laura Daniels. As I enter my twenty-second year in education, I find myself on a new path in a new place. I'm no longer a classroom reading teacher. Now, I’m the happiest librarian in the land! It is time to celebrate everyone choosing a book on the very first day in the library! It is exciting to greet each library class with a basket of books at the door. Each patron will know the library is the most magical place, full of stories to treasure from their first moment through the door. It is genuinely the librarian’s honor to share the love of reading on each patron’s first school year visit. Like the cafeteria serving food to hungry children in the early morning of the first day of school, the library will provide beautiful book choices to every child who enters the library door. Make book check-out a priority on day one of library class this year!

And for an example from a new secondary SLMC:

Meet Shannon

Hi, my name is Shannon Brinkley! I am the new Media Coordinator at First Flight Middle School. After 18 years of teaching in the general education classroom, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted the opportunity to reach students and staff outside my four classroom walls. I am very excited to meet the students at FFMS. One of my goals this year is to get the students and staff into the library. So here is my first attempt! I have purchased water bottle stickers online (you can get LOTS for just $30) and am offering up this challenge. If a student comes to complete one of the three items listed they will choose a new back-to-school water bottle sticker. I hope to have activities like this all year that will encourage ALL students (not just students looking for a book) to come be a part of the library!

FFMS 3 things to earn a sticker. Create something in the makerspace, Introduce yourself to the librarian, check out a book!

As an educator-on-loan, the work I do often in my home district of Dare Co. is supporting new librarians. You met a few last year, and I will continue to partner with Laura, Shannon, and other colleagues from the Dare librarians + other districts to bring ideas and content. The aim is to share ideas & build community, so you're also invited to add your examples to the NEW(s) 101 Padlet - each month, a new column will be available for anyone to contribute.

What Say, You!?

Flip Logo

I was recently asked "What is the first how to book I should read about being a librarian?" - so many great titles out there, but my suggestion was 'Leading from the Library.'

Share your recommended new or favorite professional librarian reads (or more!) on Flip!

Padlet logo

Want to talk about your opening activity from this school year? Or share resources for how you kick off the year in your library? Please do so on our collaborative board.

Each month, you're invited to engage with this large network of NC librarians on Flip or on Padlet. If you have additional suggestions for how to network, please send them my way!
