📬 NC NEW(s) Librarian Vol 5
North Carolina Public Schools sent this bulletin at 12/08/2022 10:57 AM EST
We made it to December, y'all!
The format of Vol. 5 might look a little different as we are using GovDelivery to ensure it arrives in your email box and not filtered & lost in an email blackhole. Don't worry, the content hasn't changed and you can view it one of three ways:
1️⃣ Scroll down for a text-friendly version! Graphics & links still included but you don't have to navigate fonts, colors, or too many graphics
2️⃣ Click on over to view on the same Canva format as previous volumes
3️⃣ Open the PDF for offline viewing
Thank you to Stephanie Haumont & Samantha Lam from Johnston Co. Public Schools for providing some fantastic ideas to engage teen readers in this newsletter! Don't worry if you're an elementary librarian - many of their ideas could translate to any age group.
We also have another Lunch & Learn with Karei Swift of Follett Learning - on Jan. 11 we'll dig into Destiny Collections, which is featured a few times in the JCPS examples!
And this month's reading recommendation comes from Sarah Justice, librarian at Rosman Middle and High Schools.
Wishing y'all a safe, healthy, restful & restorative winter break ❄️ Hope you read something that brings you joy!
Get this as a forward? Be sure to sign up to get it delivered right to you in the future!
Engaging Teen Readers
Stephanie Haumont and Samantha Lam with Johnston County Public Schools share with us some of their most successful ideas that get teens actively engaged in school library programs. More than just getting them in, their goal is for students to leave with a book and a renewed interest in reading for pleasure.
⬆️ Stephanie app-smashed a map created on Canva with ThingLink, that links out to Destiny Collections!
⬇️ Her Interactive Stacks also uses Collections + Canva & Smore.
Sam and Stephanie share lesson ideas and programming resources that appeal to teens and sparks their curiosity in reading, creating, and learning. They also provide suggestions for digital tools that they use to promote and brand their libraries and curate materials. These programming ideas may be geared towards teens, but elementary SLMCs should find inspiration that can be adapted to your school community.
Sam is the media coordinator at West Johnston High School and was previously an elementary librarian. Stephanie was previously the media coordinator at Cleveland High and now serves as the Digital Learning and Media Specialist for the district.

Lunch & Learn: Destiny Collections
Interested in knowing more about using Destiny Collections after seeing that example from JoCo?! Karei Swift will show us how to utilize this feature in Destiny Discover in our next Lunch & Learn.
RSVP to attend on Wednesday January 11th, 11:30am - 12:30pm
or if you want the session recording shared via email if you cannot attend live
If you missed our first Lunch & Learn on Tips & Tricks with Follett Destiny Discover, check out the recording. Something new I learned was creating a detailed PDF version of a Collection to share out & I plan to explore more in the Classroom Ready Collections, curated by Follett Learning, featuring fair use, Open Education Resources.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR LIBRARY?
Wouldn't it be fun if we could tour each others' libraries, to get ideas and inspiration? That might be challenging IRL but much more realistic using FLIP!
The Digital Learning & Media team in Carteret County created their own Flip topic to share with each other, and it inspired me to think about how we could extend that idea statewide - check out ECHS's example on the grid to get started - thanks Kam!
Join the Group to show off your shelves, displays, thoughtful design, self-check out, furniture... whatever makes your space awesome and inviting!
Librarians are reading:

Sarah Justice, librarian at Rosman Middle and High, & NCSLMA past president recommends Midnight Children by Dan Gemeinhart. She says, "He writes some of the most endearing stories with the best characters. At turns making you cry and then laugh out loud. I’m at the point where I will read anything he writes knowing I can recommend all his books to middle grade readers."
Yes, I'm still trying to get more book talking on Flip happening on our channel!
