📬 NC NEW(s) Librarian Vol 11 | Centers in the Library

NCDPI Bulletin Header

Welcome! This is a virtual/hybrid support network for NC Librarians with
a focus on those newly entering the field, or any SLMC seeking new ideas & connections.

In 2023-24, I'm trying something different. Each month, a new page will be added to the Canva resource, so all the information is in one place. You'll receive a reminder email via 📬 NCPublicSchools@public.govdelivery.com & a text-friendly version. Additional special bulletins or events may also be announced via GovDelivery so be sure to have that email address approved for your subscribed email inbox.

As promised, this month's theme is directly from practicing librarians & some of their peers!

Along with content specific to how to employ Centers/Stations for library instruction, there is a  "Lightbulb moment" quick PD on AI and Librarians.

The aim is to share good ideas across the state, and to cultivate a community so please consider participating on the Padlet this month to share your thoughts/resources on AI and on centers.

If you have something you'd like to feature from your library/team, please reach out via email!

You have a few ways to explore this volume 11 of the NC NEW(s) Librarian:

Using centers in Student-centered libraries:

This month’s theme comes from some conversations I’ve had recently with Stephanie Haumont, Digital Learning & Media Specialist from Johnston Co’s and several Dare Co. peers about what it means to be student-centered in the instructional context of school libraries. In standard 2 of our evaluation instrument, we’re called to: create a welcoming and accessible physical space that facilitates active learning, promotes participation and collaboration and teamwork, and provides flexibility to accommodate multiple learning styles, 21st Century skills, and reading enjoyment.

And that can definitely be achieved using centers or stations, where students participate in a variety of activities that enrich a main idea, like a read aloud story that’s shared whole-group, or perhaps an ongoing theme. Vanessa Calhoun, Media Center Specialist and Equity Champion from Carrington Middle School in Durham posted how she ran Dot Day centers in September on her social media channels, then followed up with a dynamic listening station to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

What I love about these in a secondary setting is it brings students to the media center to engage in literacy beyond the traditional ways, with art, music and celebrating global literacy.

Nags Head Elementary School Librarian, Laura Shaw, was newly appointed to the position in Spring 2023, but she's fully adopted the Centers rotation model for her classes. Listen to this brief interview on how she uses them, then, check out the examples slide deck to learn how her teammate, ITF Lori O'Neal, was the inspiration for her adopting the practice!

Looking for some structured advice about getting started?

Chatham Co.’s Bitsy Griffin published a helpful article on Knowledge Quest you can access here.

As an educator-on-loan, the work I do often in my home district of Dare Co. is supporting new librarians. You met a few last year, and I will continue to partner with Laura other colleagues from the Dare librarians + other districts to bring ideas and content. The aim is to share ideas & build community, so you're also invited to add your examples to the NEW(s) 101 Padlet - each month, a new column will be available for anyone to contribute.

Lightbulb Moment 💡
Instant & Inspired PD

This month: Check out this great podcast conversation between John Spencer & librarian Kristina Holzweiss on how SLMCs can leverage AI to reach all students.

Podcasts are my favorite on-the-go professional learning & John Spencer has great interviews & timely, relevant blog posts.

There are also educator guides with lessons & ‘unplugged’ projects about AI available through your ISTE membership.

What Say, You!?

Hop over to our Padlet to share YOUR AI thoughts and resources!

Some questions are waiting for you over there:
How is AI a teaching assistant for you??

With your librarian lens, how are you specifically addressing the AI Influence on skills and learning??

What are some helpful AI resources you're using to learn more about it, or to teach others??

Please share your thoughts on our collaborative board.

Each month, you're invited to engage with this large network of NC librarians on Flip or on Padlet. If you have additional suggestions for how to network, please send them my way!
