Find your shoreland classification, and more
Trying to figure out the shoreland district for your lake? Now we have a helpful viewer to help property owners, local officials and others! See the DNR Shoreland Classifications and Special Waterbody Designations viewer.
See the following:
- The shoreland classifications for lakes and rivers throughout the state.
- Select a basin or watercourse to see a pop-up with the additional details on the DNR Basin ID and Public Waters category.
- The location and extent of special waterbody designations, including: Mississippi River Corridor Critical Area (MRCCA); Wild, Scenic and Recreational Rivers (WSR); Lower St. Croix Riverway (LSCR) and North Shore Management Zone.
This tool will help property owners and local officials see what development standards (i.e., lot width and setbacks) apply for a site.
See the DNR's Shoreland Management Lake, River and Stream Classifications page for more information on the purpose of classifications, classification criteria and types of classifications.
Minnesota’s plan to address and prepare for climate change was released Sept. 16.
The Framework is the culmination of efforts by the Climate Change Advisory Council members and stakeholders over the past year and a half. Many were involved in this effort, including legislators, state agency staff and interested public who gave input. The Framework is intended to guide critical climate action in the years to come.
To guide this work, the State of Minnesota has developed a Climate Action Framework. This plan sets a vision for how our state will address and prepare for climate change. It identifies immediate, near-term actions we must take to achieve our long-term goal of a carbon-neutral, resilient, and equitable future for Minnesota.
See the Minnesota Climate Action Framework page to see the Framework and learn more about the framework goals.
Note: This article is adapted from the Climate Action Framework page.

Are you thinking about planting before winter arrives?
A recent collaboration between Hennepin County (Transportation Project Delivery) and DNR (Division of Ecological and Water Resources) resulted in a project designed with the "Geomorphic Approach."
Before
The previous crossing was a single box culvert for County State Aid Highway 10 at South Fork Rush Creek in the city of Corcoran, MN.
|
After
The completed project design focused on promoting fish passage and channel/floodplain connectivity. An additional box culvert and regular culvert were added, along with grading and materials to facilitate fish passage and minimize erosion during high water periods.

For more information
The Geomorphic Approach applies local geomorphology to design low impact/high resilient road crossings that work to improve the natural system processes. For more information about this innovative design approach, please visit the Geomorphic Approach page.
