Free AC Units For D21 Applicants!
Two years ago, Christian Ruhekenya, a teen in our district, died while trying to escape the heat by sleeping in a car inside his family’s closed garage – his home’s AC had been broken for over a month. State law doesn’t require landlords to install AC, and we can’t change that at the Metro level. But we can help now.
District 21 is distributing portable air conditioners to eligible residents: seniors, people with disabilities, and households with kids under 12
- Must live in District 21
- Must meet income guidelines
- Call (502) 574-5092 or (502) 574-5636 to check eligibility.
Everyone deserves a safe, cool home.

This notice on behalf of our friends at Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness:
Requirements for Smoke and Tobacco Retail Establishments
Shops that sell smoke, vape, hookah or tobacco products, including cigar bars, vape stores, hookah lounges, and smoke shops and similar retail stores, please be aware that your tobacco retail license covers a wide range of smoking-related products—not just tobacco.
Why this matters:
- The license covers all items used in smoking or vaping, not just tobacco.
- Selling or displaying any of these without a proper license can result in your business receiving a citation (fine).
- Even if you sell small accessories (like rolling papers or vape batteries) you are required to have a valid license.
- Make sure your license explicitly covers all products you sell—from shisha to spare vape coils.
What products the city ordinance (LMCO § 90.11) states your retail license includes:
-
Traditional tobacco products: Cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, hookah, and shisha products
-
Electronic smoking devices and components: E-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, e-hookahs, cartridges, e-liquids, tanks, coils, batteries
-
Smoking paraphernalia: Pipes (glass, metal, wooden), water pipes, bongs, hookah pipes, rolling papers, wrappers, cigar wrappers, lighters, torches, humidors, cutters, trays
-
Accessories and replacement parts: Mouthpieces, tips, filters, screens, wicks, hoses, adapters, grinders, storage accessories
If you sell or display any of the above—including items even incidentally related to smoking—you must have a valid Smoke Retailer License and post the license under LMCO Chapter 90 § 90.11. Failure to do so may result in citations or enforcement actions.
If you are a retailer who needs to apply for your initial license, please visit their webpage.
Please don’t hesitate to call the Department of Public Health and Wellness at 502-574-6650 or email us if you have questions.

Clean Hands Up! for National Handwashing Awareness Week
It's that time of year when we’re seeing an increase in the amount of runny noses, coughing, and sneezing at home, at work, and in schools. Louisville Water will help combat those germs by boosting its Clean Hands Up! lessons as part of National Handwashing Awareness Week.
While Louisville Water's educators teach proper handwashing techniques year-round, they use this week as a great opportunity to visit several classrooms in just a few days.
Getting kids in the habit of washing their hands, especially the right way, can be challenging. Clean Hands Up! makes it fun for the kids incorporating a song, “germ” plushies, and glow-in-the-dark lotion as the pretend germs!
Once the classes lather up and wash their hands, it’s time to bring out the blacklight to show the kids how well they did or where they might need to scrub a little harder next time. The kids really get into the lesson, especially the younger ones!
“This is one of our most popular programs. Students love to practice what they learn, and then go home and teach their families how to be good 'germ stoppers'!" said Community Relations Manager Channa Newman.
Louisville Water is taking Clean Hands Up! to several other schools this week along with the South Central branch of Louisville Free Public Library and Harbor House of Louisville.
Let us know if you’d like to schedule a Louisville Water lesson for your school, workplace, or community event in 2024!
Enjoy this classic video from Tapper who helped us raise awareness about handwashing during COVID.
