LOUISVILLE, KY – Councilman Scott Reed will be joined by Louisville Parks and Recreation Executive Director Michelle King and staff as he hosts a community celebration at Hays Kennedy Park (7003 Beachland Beach Road) as we reopen newly renovated tennis courts, an upgraded basketball court and six new pickleball courts.
The renovations represent more than $600,000 in total investment in the Hays Kennedy Park and marks the conclusion of the first phase of significant improvements planned for the park located off River Road near the Historic James Taylor Neighborhood.
In addition to the new pickleball courts and resurfaced tennis and basketball courts, improvements to parking as well as enhancements to the electrical and other aspects of the park will be discussed.
“After several months of hard work by Louisville Parks and $600,000 invested, I am excited to announce 6 brand new pickleball courts and the resurfacing of the tennis and basketball courts at Hays Kennedy Park. These improved and additional amenities will add to a park that is already the proud home to the Louisville Cricket Club as well as many residents looking to enjoy a stroll in the park or a little solitude near the river.” – Councilman Scott Reed, District 16
"Unveiling the brand-new sports courts in Hays Kennedy Park is an example of our commitment to bring state of the art recreational facilities to every part of Louisville for the public to get outside and stay active. Hays Kennedy is a special park to us because of its location in the north east end, and we can't wait to see the community use the new pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts just in time for fall."

We hope to see you September 9th!
On August 6, my friend Mike Powers died at age 79. A Memorial Service for Mike will be held at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, September 7th at Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Road, with visitation at the church from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Mike lived in Fox Harbor where he and his wife Wanda raised their son and daughter. I met Mike two years ago, when he invited me to join a group of men that meets for breakfast once each month. Six years earlier, Mike had helped create the group, which is known as the “Romeos.” (The name of the group is an acronym for “retired old men eating out.”)
In commenting on Mike’s important work in Prospect, former mayor Todd Eberle wrote, “Mike served as a dedicated public servant throughout his life at the state, local and community levels. Prospect had the good fortune to have him as a citizen catalyst to move us forward in so many ways.”
Lee Tucci, longtime chair of Prospect’s Forestation Board commented on Mike’s contributions and on his compassion:
Mike was one of the initial members of the Forestation Board . One of the Board's first planting programs came from his suggestion for a line of flowering trees, dogwoods and redbuds in Little Hunting Creek Park that continue to add to the park's appeal. Moreover, Mike helped set the board's direction and operating practices. First to work with the Parks Committee on all aspects of using trees for beautification, land preservation, and animal habitat enhancement. Then to work beyond the boundaries of city-owned properties and reach out to the Prospect community by encouraging and fostering tree planting through programs such as Arborfest and by providing guidance on tree selection and tree care to all residents.
Mike's concern for others went well beyond tree issues. When another early Forestation Board member became widowed, then later home bound and isolated because of declining health, Mike organized a series of lunch time visits to help break the isolation and to provide the individual with a sense of continuing involvement and contribution.
Mike also served as a charter member of Prospect’s Parks Committee and volunteered in the city’s community library.
Apart from Prospect, Mike had a successful career as a lawyer for state and federal agencies and worked for 25 years as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts.
In 1903, Louis Brandeis stated to a reporter that “the most important office, and the one which all of us can and should fill, is that of private citizen.” When I first heard that quote twenty years ago, I found it to be a curious statement. How could a citizen be a more important public official than a president, senator, or congressman? In the 19 months that I have served as Prospect’s mayor, I have come to understand what Justice Brandeis meant. The work of private citizens like Mike Powers, Lee Tucci, and many others builds a community and enhances our quality of life.
Today, I express my condolences to Mike’s family, and I salute Mike and thank him for his significant service to our community.
