The Mayor is calling for a review of Metro policies that relate to Middle Housing and future growth. The goal is to aid in his larger objective of creating 30,000 more affordable housing units in our community. Before making these changes, public comments must be taken into account as well as a legislative review.
Any changes in policy must be announced, receive a public reading at the Metro Council and passage/signature by the Mayor and Metro Council.
An Ad-Hoc Committee was created earlier this year to review our policies as well as other aspects of Metro Government’s planning process. I sought and received an appointment to this Ad-Hoc Committee because I am concerned about many of the proposals that are being discussed.
The goal of making housing more affordable is something that is shared by all – how we get there is the key question where many of us differ.
Right now, the Mayor and his staff are taking public comments through a number of public comment meetings. Anyone can meet and document their thoughts. I assume that another round of these meetings will occur once proposals start to be filed later this year.
Many people who have a vested interest in the construction or support of government programs and incentives will be organized to get their ideas on the record, unfortunately we don’t always hear from the average citizen unless they feel personally compelled to get involved because a proposal will directly effect them. That is why I am pushing to have these forums in locations besides the normal government and community buildings nearer our city’s core, such as Locust Grove.
Here is a current list of proposals I am concerned about (there are likely others I am not listing or not yet aware of as of right now):
-
By Right Zoning: This proposal would circumvent the Metro Council from being able to review zoning cases that would significantly increase the density of zoning proposals.
- Efforts to allow greater density on land when staff concludes that it is supported by TARC or other infrastructure that may or not actually exist.
- Potential adjustments to the effect and impact of designated zones/plans and how they are used for planning purposes.
Anything that would undermine the rights of home-rule cities to review proposals within their borders.

Louisville, KY (June 3, 2024) Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS) is thrilled to unveil a partnership with Kroger for a Pet Supply Drive benefiting local shelter animals. Scheduled to run from June 3rd –17th, this collaborative effort highlights MAS's commitment to reuniting lost pets with their owners, decreasing the population of unwanted animals, and preventing instances of nuisance and dangerous animal encounters within our community.
“The Kroger Co., Louisville Division is proud to partner with Metro Animal Services to help support houseless pets in our community,” said Jessica Sharp, Corporate Affairs Manager. “Through Kroger Community Rewards, our customers support local animal shelters with their shopping, and we’re honored to continue that support by donating the most needed essentials to shelter pets.”
District 16 Louisville Metro Councilman Scott Reed joined MAS and Kroger to promote the effort. “I am proud to join MAS and Kroger to assist in this partnership, which encourages a more compassionate, responsible, and safe community for people and our beloved pets,” he said.
“By rallying our community together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of shelter animals, ensuring they receive the extra care and support they deserve,” said MAS Interim Director Adam Hamilton. “With the help of Kroger, Councilman Reed, and our community, I know this donation drive will greatly impact the lives of shelter pets and owned pets around our city.”
Donation items like puppy pads, dog/cat food and treats can be conveniently purchased and deposited into specially designated bins at select Kroger locations throughout the area. For added convenience, items can also be acquired and delivered to MAS, 3528 Newburg Rd, directly through the Kroger App. Contributions can also be made directly to Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS).
Funds raised through this initiative will be earmarked through FOMAS to support free microchipping and spaying/neutering services provided by MAS. These essential services not only facilitate the safe return of lost pets to their families but also play a pivotal role in addressing the issue of stray animal overpopulation in our community.
Join us at these participating locations as we embark on this meaningful journey to make a tangible difference in the lives of our animal companions:

BBB Issues Warning in Aftermath of Severe Storms
May 29, 2024 – BBB serving Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana warns of storm-chasing scammers in the aftermath of the weekend’s severe storms.
With any destructive and severe weather, there is an increased potential of out-of-town storm chasers looking to take advantage of victims as they begin the process of cleaning up and repairing property damage. BBB warns residents affected by the storms to beware of these scammers.
BBB offers the following tips for storm victims:
- Know your rights and responsibilities as provided by the state Attorney General. Kentucky residents can contact the Kentucky Attorney General’s office at ag.ky.gov or call 502.696.5300.
- Businesses must be licensed. Contact the Revenue Commission at 502.574.4860 to check out a company’s licensure.
- Many municipalities require a solicitation permit if salespeople go door-to-door. Verify that they need to have a permit by contacting your local Township or Municipality or call Permits & Licensing at 502.574.3321
- While most roofing contractors abide by the law, be careful allowing someone you do not know to inspect your roof. An unethical contractor may actually create damage to get work.
- Try to get at least 3-4 quotes from contractors, and insist that payments be made to the company, not an individual.
- Do not pay for the job in advance. Be wary of any contractor who demands full or half payment upfront.
- Resist high-pressure sales tactics, such as the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hire the contractor on the spot.
- Get a written contract that specifies the price, the work to be done, the amount of liability insurance coverage maintained by the contractor, and a time frame. Require a copy of their current certificate of insurance.
- For general questions or complaints related to insurance, contact your state’s Department of Insurance. Kentucky residents can visit insurance.ky.gov or call 502.564.3630.
- Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem.
- If you suspect a company may be price gouging necessary goods or services due to the area storm damage, report the business to BBB and the Attorney General’s office.
- Beware of FEMA imposters. In the past, scammers have impersonated FEMA to try to scam consumers. Remember that FEMA does not charge for inspections, and they always wear ID badges. If you are still unsure, check with FEMA first at fema.gov or call 202.646.2500.
BBB is also warning area contractors to beware of storm chasers who are willing to pay local construction companies substantial amounts of money to use a local business’s established name, reputation, and phone so they can masquerade as a local business. Many contractors who agreed to let these storm chasers use their name regret their decision once they were left holding the bag of unsatisfied customers due to bad workmanship and/or unfulfilled warranties.
Finally, BBB advises consumers to be wary of any scam callers masquerading as gas and electric company employees. LG&E and KU will never call consumers and demand payment immediately over the phone in order to restore power (or prevent it from being shut off). For any concerns regarding utilities, contact your provider directly. Do not give your financial information over the phone to any unsolicited caller.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 30, 2024) – Two new Australians are making their way to Louisville — say “G’day y’all” to Dharuk and Telowie! The two male koalas will be coming from the San Diego Zoo in California. Dharuk and Telowie join the Louisville Zoo family indefinitely as part of an agreement with the Australian government. They will arrive later this June.
Dharuk, a 2-year-old, is named after an extinct Aboriginal language of the blue mountains, pronounced “da’ rook.” Meanwhile, 4-year-old Telowie (“tell ou-ee”), is named for the saltbush plant in Australia and means “old man saltbush by the waterhole.”
The two will take up residence at the foot of Glacier Run alongside fellow Australian species. Their abode is a renovated habitat near Lorikeet Landing that previously housed snowy owls and later, the Zoo’s red panda.
Louisville Zoo Director, Dan Maloney, previously served at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia and is excited to bring koalas back to Louisville. Koalas were temporarily featured at the Zoo during the 1980s and again in the early 2000s.
“Koalas are fantastic ambassadors for Australia, representing a truly unique species,” Maloney said. “I am excited to see families experience our friends from the ‘Land Down Under’!”
Following their arrival, the two koalas will go undergo a standard 30-day quarantine period in their prepared space, enabling them to be on exhibit sooner than the usual duration. Once on exhibit, they will be housed separately, as koalas are territorial and solitary in the wild.
Zoo guests will likely see the two new residents sleeping most days. Koalas almost exclusively eat eucalyptus leaves. This plant provides low-quality nutrition that takes time for koalas to process for energy. The eucalyptus that Dharuk and Telowie consume will be from one of just two eucalyptus farms in the U.S., both dedicated to supplying zoos.
The word “koala” is believed to originate from the Dharug language, spoken by Aboriginal people in Australia. “Koala” means “no drink,” which may be a reference to the marsupial’s low water intake. These animals stay hydrated through the water content in the eucalyptus leaves that form the bulk of their diet.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened species lists koalas as decreasing in the vanishing wild. The two main threats for koalas are human development and subsequent habitat destruction.
Zoo Hours
The Zoo is open daily year-round. Spring/summer hours are 10 a.m. ─ 5 p.m. (stay until 6 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Zoo will close early on Friday, June 7, enter 10 a.m. – 2p.m. (exit by 3 p.m.). Visit louisvillezoo.org for more info.
