There were 38 reports of theft from motor vehicle in the 8th Division over the last 28 days.
LMPD's 8th Division sent out its most recent newsletter yesterday. I wanted to share a couple of things that caught my eye. First, crime is down almost 10% in the 8th Division compared to this point last year - a testament to our officers and the work they are doing. I think credit goes as well to those of you doing what you can to reduce your chances of being a victim of crime. That's a huge help, too!
The numbers from the most recent Compstat period (August 28-September 24), however, are a bit higher than the previous period, largely due to an increase in theft from vehicles by forced entry. The good news is detectives have a suspect for many of these incidents. Please make sure that nothing of value in your vehicle is visible from the outside when you are out and about.

As I've mentioned in previous newsletters, Louisville Metro has about 100 boards/commissions. These cover a wide variety of interests such as economic development, public safety, planning, tourism, and parks. Serving on one of these is a great way to utilize your talents and help our community. We currently have several vacancies, including on the following:
- Code Enforcement Board
- Commission on Public Art
- Human Relations Commission
- Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau
- Parks Advisory Commission
- Police Merit Board
- Riverport Authority
- Urban Renewal Commission

The map above shows the general locations of two properties in or near District 17 listed in the most recent Weekly Activity Report.
Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These can include changes in zoning, conditional use permits, waivers, and more. There are two cases in this week's report that might be of interest to District 17 residents. One is a revised detailed district development plan for a 52-unit apartment complex at 11400 Maple Brook Drive. The other request relates to phase two of the Park Springs development and consists of a record plat for 63 lots. Please contact the case manager listed in the report with questions or comments on either case.
Louisville Parks and Recreation's Fall Break Kids Camps are now fee-free at 11 community centers in Louisville (including the Berrytown Recreation Center). Any child between the ages of six and 12 is eligible to attend these camps held October 2-6 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Though free, registration for the camps is required. Those who may have already registered and paid for a camp will have their money refunded. Contact Tonya Cowden at tonya.cowden@louisvilleky.gov with any questions.
The image above reflects several future/possible transportation projects in or near District 17.
The Transportation Improvement Projects Dashboard is a new tool created by Metro Public Works to provide insight into projects intended to improve Louisville's transportation network. The dashboard includes projects that are funded and working towards construction as well as those that are serious contenders for future funding opportunities. Though currently showing federal projects only, Public Works continues to add information on funding sources, project types, etc. Projects in or near District 17 that you can learn more about include:
- KY 1747 (Fern Valley Road/Hurstbourne Parkway) Complete Street – adding bicycle and pedestrian connections along these corridors.
- La Grange Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements – adding two on-street bicycle lanes from Lakeland Road to Whipps Mill Road and bicycle facilities on New La Grange Road from Lyndon Lane to Whipps Mill Road.
- La Grange Road/Whipps Mill Intersection Improvements – constructing left turn lanes in both directions at this intersection.
- Westport Road Sidewalk through the I-265 Interchange – building a sidewalk on the north side of Westport Road between Towne Center Drive and Chamberlain Lane.
Feedback is an important part of this process as projects are subject to being added, removed, or modified over time. To request a change to the listed projects or to comment on the tool itself, please contact Amanda Deatherage, Transportation Planning Supervisor, at amanda.deatherage@louisvilleky.gov.
More than 6,000 athletes will descend on E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park this weekend, including 2,700 or so college runners for the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic. The events begin Friday at 5:15 p.m. with elementary school races. On Saturday, runners from 130 colleges and universities across 27 states and Canada will participate in what looks to be the second-largest college meet this season. These races, of which there are six total, begin at 9:30 a.m. Later that day, middle and high school runners will take their turn on the course.
If you're a fan of running, it should be a beautiful weekend to see some really fast times. Otherwise, please be aware of what will likely be a noticeable increase in traffic near the park this weekend.
