Message from Major Wampler
Earlier this year Louisville Metro Council unanimously approved a resolution declaring September as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. I would like to thank all the individuals and groups who have expressed their appreciation to our officers throughout the month. We were very grateful for all the kind words and food sent to the division. These acts are a great reminder of the support our officers have from the community.
September was not without hardships for LMPD though.
Traffic Guard Gertrude Schaftlein was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while directing school traffic the morning of Wednesday, September 6th. TCO Schaftlein's injuries were very serious and led to the amputation of her leg. She has served the community of Louisville as a traffic guard for 48 years. While her spirits are high, she has a long road to recovery ahead of her and needs our support.
On Thursday, September 7th Officer Brandon Haley was the second LMPD officer shot in the line of duty this year. Officer Haley was on patrol and had a vehicle stopped when he was shot after a barrage of gunfire directed at him from a nearby house. Officer Haley spent over two weeks in the hospital in critical condition. We are grateful he has been released from the hospital, but he has a long road of ahead of him as he recovers from his injuries.
The support and generosity the community has shown for LMPD and especially our injured public servants Officer Wilt, Officer Haley, and TCO Schaftlein has been amazing. Each of these public servants had their lives forever changed while serving the community they love and answering their calling to public service. If you would like to donate to support Officer Wilt, Officer Haley, and TCO Schaftlein financially you may do so through the Louisville Metro Police Foundation. The foundation will give any donations received in their names directly to them to help support their recoveries.

August 2023
Officer of the Month
Officer Larry Singleton
Officer Larry Singleton is the 8th Division Officer of the Month for August. Officer Singleton responded to a domestic violence run where the victim had been held at gunpoint and pistol-whipped multiple times. The alleged suspect had just been released from jail the night before. He had been arrested for an alleged domestic assault with the same victim. The victim was finally able to call police for help after the suspect left the location. Officer Singleton answered the call and began an investigation to locate the suspect. Officer Singleton identified a possible location for the suspect in the 4th Division and worked with the 4th Division officers to check the address. His investigation confirmed the current location of the suspect, and he was able to take him into custody quickly. Officer Singleton’s effort in this case took a violent suspect off the streets before he could commit additional crimes in our city. This suspect was charged with 3 felonies and is still incarcerated at this time due to his criminal history which includes a pending Complicity to Murder which he was out on bond for.

There has been a large increase in the number of incidents involving forced entry by breaking vehicle windows. The detectives have a suspect for many of these incidents. However, we need your help to prevent these types of crimes. Help reduce your chances of being a victim by locking your vehicles and not leaving bags or valuable items visible from the outside of your vehicle.
