Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!
Hello Superior,
Last month, the Town Board approved a contract to rebuild Big Sagamore, Little Sagamore and Children’s parks — all of which were destroyed in the Marshall Fire. Although the Town Board previously approved the purchase of the playground equipment for these parks last year, construction was delayed because a new land survey was required as a result of all the rebuilding in the neighborhood which impacted the area’s drainage.
While it’s disappointing the surveying process pushed back the timeline of these parks until the end of summer/early fall, the good news is the survey is complete and construction has started!
These parks are very important to me and every member of the Town Board. They are not just places where children play; they are gathering spots for the community, places to celebrate being back home and together again. They are an integral part of the entire rebuilding process and help make these rebuilt neighborhoods feel like home again.
Here are some renderings of these amazing new playgrounds:

Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Tips to help reduce wind-blown trash and recycling!
Weather can change quickly in Colorado. Try these tips to reduce wind-blown trash and recycling on extra windy days!
Delay Wait as long as possible to put your bins at the curbside, up to 7 a.m. on collection day. If you can, hold back your recycling bin until the next week's collection.
Bring bins in ASAP Empty bins are even more likely to blow away. Try to stow your bins as soon after collection as possible.
No extra trash or bags If it doesn't fit in your bins with the lid closed, hold it back for the next collection.
Mark your bins To help identify and recover bins that blow away, duct tape a paper with your street address on the underside of the bin's lid.
Bag it You can use paper bags to bag your recycling and are encouraged to bag all your trash, especially smaller pieces. Try the recyclable 30 gallon Kraft paper bags available at home stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot.
Lids closed Make sure your lid is completely closed with no material extending outside the bin. Do not place anything on top of the closed lid as this can be dangerous to you, pedestrians, the truck operator or cars.

Huge discounts are available on electric lawn equipment
Thanks to a new law that went into effect at the beginning of this year, Coloradans now have access to a 30% discount on electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers and trimmers at participating retailers statewide. No voucher, rebate paperwork or other work needed!
How it works:
- Visit a participating store. The discount is unavailable online, so you must go in person. The state tax credit goes to participating retailers in exchange for offering a 30% discount to their customers.
- Pick out the qualifying electric equipment that works best for you and enjoy an instant discount at the register!
The state has not yet provided a list of participating retailers, but we have confirmed that the following stores close to Superior are participating:
- JAX Lafayette Farm & Ranch, 400 W. South Boulder Road, Ste. 3000 in Lafayette
- Home Depot, 1200 W. Dillon Road in Louisville
The Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG) has the most comprehensive list of stores, though not all information was recently confirmed. If you know of another local retailer participating, please let us know and we will update our information.

Public Works & Utilities working with Xcel to convert streetlights to LED bulbs
Public Works & Utilities is working with Xcel Energy to convert approximately 400 residential streetlights from 100-watt high-pressure sodium bulbs to 15-watt LED bulbs.
The conversion will result in an 80 to 90% reduction in energy use from these streetlights while maintaining a similar aesthetic and lighting pattern.
The work is scheduled to begin in June and conclude in late 2024.
The Town completed a similar conversion last year in the Calmante neighborhood. If you would like more information about streetlights in Superior, please contact the Public Works & Utilities Department.

Enrollment open for new Boulder Valley School District students
As July 4 approaches, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office reminds the public most fireworks are illegal!
A message from Sergeant David Salaman with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office:
With the Fourth of July coming up, I thought I would remind everyone how dangerous fireworks are. There are approximately 15,000 people treated from fireworks injuries each year. On top of injuries, there is always the risk of fire. As we all know, fire danger is near and dear to our hearts.
Questions come up every year about what types of fireworks are allowed in the Town of Superior. Any fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal. This limits the legal fireworks to sparklers, fountains and similar devices. As always, please be careful and aware of where the hot embers are going. An adult should always closely supervise all children.
Please review this PDF to learn more about what's allowed in Boulder County.
