Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!
Hi Superior,
On Feb. 12, the Town Board authorized the purchase of another piece of open space along Coal Creek in Original Town. This is now the fourth open space purchase that the Town has made over the past two years in this area.
In 2023, we purchased the following properties: (1) Marcel/Superior Preservation LLC property (.752 acres); (2) McNulty property (1.28 acres); and (3) Kilbride property (.32 acres). Our most recent purchase (Rodelli property .28 acres) complements the purchases made in 2023. As detailed in the map below, most of the properties that access Coal Creek are now permanently protected open space.

In November of 2001, Superior voters passed a ballot question, authorizing a 0.3% sales tax for open space. That sales tax goes into a special Open Space Fund, which is to be used for open space acquisitions or to enhance and expand wildlife corridors. To make these particular purchases happen, in addition to using our Open Space Fund, we partnered with the Conservation Fund and the Mile High Flood District (which contributed over $500,000 towards these purchases).
I do need to acknowledge that many of these recent open space acquisitions were only possible because homes were lost in the Marshall Fire and their owners, for various reasons, did not rebuild them. While it is sad to lose these community members, we are grateful that they chose to sell their land to the Town so that we could preserve it in perpetuity as open space.
It is wonderful to live in a community that values our natural environment and which is committed to protecting and preserving open spaces. Many thanks to all of you — and our partners — who worked with us to conserve these important natural resources. Special thanks to our Open Space Advisory Committee (OSAC), which works hard to help identify and recommend open space purchases to the Town Board.
Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Snow Busters help keep sidewalks safe for pedestrians. Sign up to give or receive help.
The Snow Buster volunteer program exists to assist residents who report they are physically and financially unable to remove snow, sleet and ice from the sidewalk adjacent to their property to remain in compliance with Municipal Code 11-1-20.
Superior's code states that all snow, sleet and ice obstructing a sidewalk adjoining a homeowner's property must be removed by the owner within 24 hours of the end of each snowfall. Once a violation is determined, a code enforcement officer may issue a warning advising the property owner to correct the violation within 24 hours. A lack of compliance may lead to a municipal court summons.
Fill out this application to become a volunteer or to request snow removal assistance. We are looking for folks who love getting out in the snow and love to help others!
For questions or assistance with the form, please contact Superior's Events and Volunteers Manager Mikaela Gregg by email or by phone at (303) 499-3675, ext. 128.

Public Works and Utilities
Castle Peak Avenue residents are invited to participate in traffic calming meeting on March 18
A public meeting for residents who live on Castle Peak Ave. has been scheduled on March 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Superior Community Center regarding traffic calming along the Castle Peak Avenue corridor.
Town staff received a traffic calming application from residents along Castle Peak Avenue, asking the Town to review traffic speeds, as well as bike and pedestrian safety along Castle Peak Avenue south of Mt. Sopris Way. Staff reviewed this request with the Transportation Safety Committee during its January meeting. The Committee decided to move forward with the next steps of community outreach and engagement.
A flyer with a link to a survey about traffic calming on the corridor will be sent to affected residents ahead of the meeting.

Two departments will share new maintenance and operations facility to increase effectiveness
The 2024 Town budget includes funding for an operations and maintenance facility which will serve the needs of the Town’s Public Works and Utilities and Parks, Recreation and Open Space departments.
These teams currently use repurposed buildings and connex containers for facility and storage space, but these temporary facilities do not meet their needs. Overall operations will be improved with the addition of the new facility, especially during extreme weather cycles.
The new operations and maintenance facility is currently in the design phase and will be located near the existing yard waste recycling site and wastewater treatment plant off of Honey Creek Lane.
Staff is planning to present a concept building and site plan to the Town Board and the public in late spring or early summer.
