County Closures for Cesar Chavez Day Holiday
To commemorate the Cesar Chavez Day holiday, all San Diego County offices, family resource centers, libraries and animal shelters will be closed to the public Monday, April 1.
Law enforcement, emergency animal control response, and other essential services will continue through the holiday.

Central Region Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Symposium
We are very excited to announce that this year’s Central Region Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) Symposium will be held on Saturday, May 25th, 2024. This free community event will provide information and access to resources and services particularly relevant to grandparents, other relatives, or adults with a family-like bond to a child who have assumed the role of primary caregivers.
The theme for this year is “Harmony Within, Balance Throughout” with an emphasis on managing stress and providing emotional & mental support for caregivers while nurturing self-care efforts. The symposium will include a resource fair and workshops focused on mindfulness in addition to guest speakers and other activities. Lunch will be provided. Childcare may be provided and will be confirmed by phone closer to the event.

New Affordable Housing Opens in the Heart of City Heights
A new affordable housing community serving City Heights families celebrated an exciting grand opening.
City Heights Place and City Heights Plaza Del Sol are neighboring buildings in the heart of City Heights. Together, they provide 135 new single-bedroom, 2- bedroom, and 3-bedroom apartment homes. Public transportation, groceries, restaurants, and the local YMCA are all within walking distance.

County Opens New Online Public Records Request Center
The County has unveiled a new, easy-to-use website to help people submit public record requests, track their progress, and see if those records are already available if someone else asked for them first.
California’s Public Records Act was established in 1968. It declared that “access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state.”

Apply for FEMA Disaster Relief Assistance
Residents and businesses impacted by damage from severe storms from January 21-23, 2024, may qualify for federal disaster assistance.
Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for:
- Temporary housing (FEMA housing assistance is separate from the County
of San Diego Emergency Temporary Lodging Program).
- Essential home repairs.
- Uninsured and underinsured property losses.
- Other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

NEW! County Recommends Syphilis Screenings During Pregnancy as Infant Cases Rise
Cases of babies born with syphilis have increased in San Diego County, reaching a record 35 in 2022, according to new data from County Public Health officials.
Syphilis is a contagious bacterial infection that can be spread through sexual contact or from a birthing parent to a baby during pregnancy. That is called congenital syphilis and can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, major health problems in babies, and even death, if not treated.

MPOX Resources
MPOX is a viral disease that can make you sick. One symptom includes a rash, which may look like pimples or blisters, often with an earlier flu-like illness. MPOX is rare and does not spread easily between people without close contact. The threat of MPOX to the general US population remains low.

NEW! California Legislative Black Caucus African-American Leaders for Tomorrow Program
The California Legislative Black Caucus’ (CLBC) African-American Leaders for Tomorrow Program is for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are interested in an on-campus, immersion experience. The 2024 African-American Leaders for Tomorrow Program takes place from July 17th and 20th, 2024 on-campus at Cal State Dominguez Hills, located in Los Angeles, CA.
The CLBC Youth Leadership Programs seek to identify and help prepare the next generation to become community, business, governmental and nonprofit organizational leaders in the African-American community. The primary goal of the CLBC Youth Leadership Programs is to "build a bench" of young leaders who will lead California in solving issues of protecting voter rights, increasing access to higher education and career training.
Applications are due April 30th.

Mother Inspiring Healthy Action Program
UC San Diego is inviting people to participate in a study for mothers and their adult daughters interested in achieving a healthier weight. During a 24-week program, participants will learn how to make lifestyle changes involving healthy eating and increased physical activity. The program is available at no cost.
Mother and daughter may be eligible if both are:
- Overweight
- 18-65 years of age
- Mexican or Mexican American
- Able to attend 24 weekly sessions together
- Interested in losing weight

Citizens Academy
Participate in the San Diego County Probation Department's 4th Annual Citizens Academy. The 4-week course will be free of charge and run from Sunday, April 7th through Monday, May 6th. The course will meet 4 times from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Community Support Office, 3977 Ohio St., San Diego, CA 92104.
This engaging and informative program is designed to give participants the history, role, and responsibilities of the Probation Department. The program is also designed to provide participants with an increased understanding of the operations and practices of the Probation Department.

The RISE Urban Leadership Fellows Program focuses on the personal and professional development of each fellow through intensive forums, the development and implementation of a self-selected community project, and coaching and peer learning throughout the fellowship year.

County Extends Emergency Temporary Lodging Program for Flood Victims
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted last Tuesday to extend the Emergency Temporary Lodging Program.
The program, which was launched on February 10th, has provided safe and secure lodging for more than 840 families who were displaced by flooding from the January 22 storm.
