February 25, 2022
Hello,
Earlier this week, we hosted the Annual State of the City presentation. The entire production is available to view on our YouTube Channel. We also published the Annual Report to our Community, which includes updated statistics, demographics, and general updates of interest to residents, businesses, and visitors of American Canyon. Here are the highlights from the presentation:
- Beginning March 7th, the National Community Survey™(The NCS™), comprehensive quality of life survey, all American Canyon residents will be invited to participate. The survey includes questions about quality of life, important characteristics of the City's community services, and priorities for the future. Read below in this newsletter for more information on the NCS.
- We shared a video to show how you can participate in the City’s public meetings.
- Since March 2020, when our Virtual City Hall was established from the necessity of the pandemic restrictions, we have provided service through approximately 12,500 online processes, that’s an average of 500 per month. Each month, approximately 2,300 web portal payments are submitted for utility bills. Our new recreation software, CivicRec, is soaring at more than 580 transactions, nearly 100 registration services above the old software (475 a month) in its first month! We are proud to serve 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year through these tools. As we all transition to living with COVID-19, we continue to maneuver through the ways our lives have changed. The City will build upon our success in providing virtual services and balance the effectiveness in supporting the needs of our community with the necessary adjustments related to the needs of our staff and their work environment.
- Finance Director, Lincoln Bogard, shared a tutorial highlighting the City’s new Transparency Portal. On this site, users can view the City’s financial data, including budgets, revenues, expenses, and more.
- Our Public Works Director, Erica Ahmann Smithies, shared exciting news about pavement rehabilitations coming this summer, including a partnership with Napa County on improvements to the asphalt on American Canyon Road West and construction of a sidewalk to close the gap on Eucalyptus Drive. She also provided an update on the Devlin Road & Vine Trail Extension and Green Island Road Projects.
- Terrence McGrath provided a very informative update on the Watson Ranch development progress with an incredible birds-eye view time-lapse of construction in the area.
- Maintenance and Utilities Director, Felix Hernandez III, provided an update on upcoming playground replacements at four parks in town, renderings of what those playgrounds will include, locations where Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations will be installed, and new recycled water installations.
- Alexandra Ikeda, Parks and Recreation Director, provided a video from her team showcasing the new recreation software, including registering for activities and renting a park for your party needs! She also highlighted the upcoming events that will provide many opportunities for us to all be together again.
- Valerie Zizak-Morais, American Canyon Chamber of Commerce President/CEO, announced the return of their popular “Meet Me in the Street” event series beginning in June through August. She also announced an exciting collaborative 30th anniversary year community celebration, “Fall in Love with Am Can,” coming this fall.
- The presentation concluded with the answers to a few of the questions we received from the community. The remainder of submitted questions will be answered in the coming weeks and posted on https://www.cityofamericancanyon.org/stateofthecity.
Stay tuned this spring for the upcoming annual presentations from our Police and Fire District Chiefs on public safety in our community.
Take care,
Jason B. Holley
City Manager
P.S. - Don’t miss your chance to take a heart home! There are two days left to bid on a heart or heart frame from American Canyon Community & Parks Foundations’ Heart Your Parks month. Bidding ends Sunday, February 27th, at noon. Now is your chance to bring home one of these beautiful pieces that have very special meaning in our community.

Wetlands Edge Traffic Calming Project
Our Public Works Team completed traffic calming upgrades on Wetlands Edge Road this week. The project began with a resident petition following the City’s Traffic Calming Program process. The enhancements include traffic narrowing curbs, delineators, centerline striping, signs, and speed cushions at three strategic locations along the straightaway. We’d love to hear what you think of this project, please take this short survey to let us know.
The Public Works Department designs, constructs, and maintains City streets while the Police Department enforces traffic laws. The City has a Traffic Working Group that meets regularly to evaluate concerns about traffic safety while also addressing community member concerns. The Traffic Working Group consists of staff from the American Canyon Fire Protection District, American Canyon Police Department, and Public Works Department.
Our Traffic Calming Program page provides helpful traffic safety-related information. In addition, it provides a portal for our community members to share their concerns directly with our Traffic Working Group.

General Plan Housing Element
We are updating our housing plan to meet current and future needs, but we need your input, American Canyon! Help us find solutions right for our city by taking our short survey (available in English and Spanish). A Housing Element Workshop is on the City Council meeting agenda for March 1, 2022. This is also an excellent opportunity to share your thoughts on the housing needs in our community. Learn more in our recent press release and at AmCan2040.org.

National Community Survey Information and Tips
Randomly selected American Canyon households are receiving invitations from the City to participate in the National Community Survey™(The NCS™) comprehensive quality of life survey. The survey includes questions about the quality of life, important characteristics of the City's community services, and priorities for the future.
For now, the survey is only open by invitation, and to maintain the accuracy of data samples, we ask that the survey link not be shared with others. Beginning March 7, the survey will be open to all residents through the City's website at CityofAmericanCanyon.org. We look forward to sharing the survey findings later this spring. Read more about the NCS in our press release here.
Here are a few helpful tips we’ve learned so far for those of you receiving the invitation in the mail:
- Internet Explorer will not access the link since Microsoft has discontinued it, and it is no longer updated.
-
Type the URL link into your browser's address bar, polco.us/ followed by the code provided on the invitation in all lowercase. You do not have to type "https://" for the link to work.
- If you need a paper version of the survey or any other accommodation to complete the survey, please don't hesitate to contact our Communications Manager Jen Kansanback by phone at (707) 647-5355 or email JKansanback@CityOfAmericanCanyon.org.

Recycled Water Program
In 2021 the City of American Canyon, like all of California, experienced its second consecutive dry year and drought conditions. The City proactively approached this by declaring a stage 2 emergency, asking for a 20% reduction in potable water use. The City aided residential customers in this reduction by developing and implementing a residential recycled water delivery program. The program delivered over 1 million gallons of recycled water to 318 residential customers, who in turn used this water instead of potable for irrigating landscapes and gardens. The City would like to hear from you, our residential customers, about this service. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey.
Want to know more about recycled water? Please visit our website.
