Good morning,
I talk about Pima County's Prosperity Initiative often in my newsletters, as I should. Its framework is woven into all county departments and is supported by municipal, tribal, nonprofit, education, business, and faith-based communities. Our Economic Development Department has an especially important role in this initiative. Our team strategically partners with businesses, government entities, and educational institutions to create a blueprint for our county's future.
This week the Board proclaimed May 11-17 Economic Development Week. What a great reminder of how important Economic Development is in helping our community grow and prosper. If you would like to learn more about Pima County's Economic Development Plan, check out the link below.

UPDATE - Differential Water Rate Resolution
On Tuesday, you received a press release from me regarding differential water rates. The resolution I took to the Board failed 2-3. What was requested by my fellow board members was that we work together with the City of Tucson. They asked for more dialog and impact data.
I absolutely agree in the need for regionalism and increased collaboration not just between the city and the county but with all of the local jurisdictions in terms of how we are making use of this most precious resource. Since 1979 the City and Pima County have been willing to engage in dialog both as the regional sewer and regional water providers. My intent was not to sow division between the board but to stand for what is right for the unincorporated residents of Pima County.
After a lengthy discussion, the final decision from the board was to have the County Administrator initiate discussions with the City of Tucson regarding water and sewer rates.
In Memoriam...
District 1 and Pima County lost an incredible leader and valued community servant last week when Don Riegger passed away. Don was a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, having served for many years as a volunteer and as the former president of the Scouts’ Catalina Council. He was also a member of the boards of the Arizona Theatre Company and the Tucson Optimist Club, as well as a generous donor to a myriad of local charities and causes. Don is survived by his wife, Mallory, and their three sons, Donald, Douglas and David.
Don was a very good friend who left us too quickly and far too soon. He and I met for a meal just a few weeks ago. My strongest memory of our time together was how much of it he spent updating me on the lives of his children and how proud he was of their many accomplishments.
An email went out last week to folks in the county who shared Don’s love of Scouting. The author of the email said the following about Don and these words of tribute should also serve as guides for all of us:
Don lived a life full of service, laughter, love and leadership. While his absence leaves a tremendous void, the example he set and the joy he shared will continue to inspire us all.
