Eliza Davis Joins Marysville School Board
OSPI's Office of Native Education is excited to share the news of Tulalip tribal member Eliza Davis being elected to serve on the Marysville School Board!
Ms. Davis was sworn in on Thursday, November 30 and, though faced with challenges, is eager to begin the work for a future of funding and equity at MSD.
We congratulate Eliza on her venture!

BIE Roll Call Recognizes Yakama Nation Tribal School
Students at Yakama Nation Tribal School in Toppenish were nationally recognized due to their involvement in celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November.
The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) publication of Roll Call, November 24, highlighted the students engaging in activities and cultural celebrations, such as harvesting and preparing traditional foods, learning fish butchering techniques, listening to elders speak, and much more.

Community Health Professions Academy (CHPA) is a program aimed at 9th – 12th grade students from minority or underrepresented/rural communities including American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, and/or African American, however, all are welcome to apply.

Financial Assistance for Students
The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) is proud to sponsor the AIANTA Tourism and Hospitality Scholarship, which provides American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students with financial assistance towards a degree or certificate in hospitality, tourism, recreation, culinary arts, museum studies or related fields.
Three students will be awarded $1,000 each semester (fall and spring semester only).

Students Learn from Elders
"Intergenerational communication and information sharing are important lessons," says Healthy Native Youth.
The students partnered with OXDX to create a shirt design about the importance of listening to our Elders and passing down traditions to the next generation. Check out this YouTube video of THRIVE native youth discussing storytelling and the wisdom of elders.

Tribal Sovereignty Curriculum Introductory Trainings Coming Soon!
Be sure to watch here for the next date of this free training. The eight-hour workshop offers place-based training with nearest Tribes, which includes an overview of the STI curriculum, guided navigation through the website, and an introduction to the Native Knowledge 360 curriculum.

Strengthening Tribal Consultation Training

Senate Bill 5252 states that beginning September 1, 2024, school board members, superintendents, and any other staff at school districts that are required to perform Tribal consultation under Title VI of the federal ESSA (P.L. 114-95, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 1001 et seq., 20 U.S.C. 6301 et seq.) must take and certify completion of the 3-hour Strengthening Tribal Consultation training focusing on:
- Native Student Identification
- Data Sharing
- Implementation of Tribal history, culture and government – Since Time Immemorial
Additional trainings are being planned for School Year 2023–2024 and will be posted on our Tribal Consultation webpage and sent as they become available.
