Roadrunner Rundown

October 5, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Family Picnic on Friday evening. We were appreciative to have our Superintendent, Dr. Reid, and School Board members Karl Frisch and Melanie Meren at the event as well. As you may have seen in Dr. Reid’s weekly reflection, she enjoyed our family gathering.  Our PTA sponsored this event and could not have done so without the leadership and hard work of our parent volunteers. A special shout-out to our amazing event leaders, Elise Seay and Stefania Gourzi, for coordinating all the details and making the evening such a success. And a huge thank you to our dedicated parent volunteers — April Corbett, Miranda Egan, Sreeja Prabhakaran, Melina Rojas, Jason Alden, Ismini Michail, and Yesenia Serrano — for giving their time and helping everything run smoothly.  Also a special thanks to the many staff who were here all day and carved out time in the evening to join the picnic. Thank you all for strengthening the chain in such a significant way.

Please click on this link for our upcoming Family Partnership Night to see what content will be offered on October 22nd and to answer 3 short questions about childcare and food for those who will attend so we can be prepared.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett and Kelly Willis

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screening

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding, and managing emotions, establishing, and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the fall SEL Screener for the week of October 19th-23rd.  Opt-outs forms have been pushed out through The Parent Digital Consent System at the FCPS Opt-Out Page FCPS Opt-Out Page. Questions?  Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at mmgillespie@fcps.edu or (703) 937-1558.

A heartfelt thank you to all the families who joined us on Friday for our Fall Picnic! It was wonderful to see so many families come together, enjoy the evening, and celebrate our MRES community. We have a few more shout-outs in addition to those that Mr. Chapman recognized above.

We also want to give a big thank you to the Madison High School and Thoreau Middle School students who kept the fun going with games, face painting, and tattoos. Our kids had a blast!

It truly takes a village to make an event like this happen, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make Friday night such a fun and memorable evening for our MRES families. 💙

Staff Spotlight

MRES Staff Spotlight - Ms. Zakreski

Hi! My name is Sarah Zakreski. I am a First Grade teacher at MRES and this is my first year teaching! In May, I graduated from William & Mary. I love watching sports (Go Packers, Nationals, Capitals, and Wizards!) and in my free time, I like to run (yes, for fun), spend time outdoors, and read. I love being part of the MRES family because everyone is so welcoming and kind. I am passionate about spending time with my best friend Diane McCulla! Thank you all for being so welcoming and supportive in my first year teaching!
