Raising Stammering Awareness

To coincide with International Stammering Awareness day (22 October 2019) we are writing to health and educational professionals to promote prompt referral of children and young people who stammer. Sussex NHS Community Trust (SCT) has a specialist speech and language therapy service for children and young people who stammer from the ages of two to nineteen.

Please see attached information sheet outlining the importance of prompt referrals to the SCT service who are always happy to provide advice to professionals. We would be grateful if you could discuss this with your team and display the flyer in your staff area.

Without support, stammering can significantly disrupt an individual’s ability to communicate, as well as their social, educational and psychological development. We would encourage you to refer children as soon as they start to stammer. Early intervention at a young age has the best outcome and can prevent a lifetime of stammering, but therapy for stammering at any age is essential to enable a young person to achieve their full potential.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the SCT (contact details are on the attached flyer) or for further information, visit the website of the British Stammering Association www.stamma.org.
