1. Starting School September 2019 – Important Information

Are any children in your setting due to start school in September 2019?

If you care for children born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they are eligible to start school in September 2019. Please remind their parents to apply for a school place as the deadline is imminent.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: TUESDAY 15 JANUARY

The online application system is available now and the deadline for all applications is Tuesday 15 January 2019. Applications made after this date will be considered after all applications received prior to the deadline and may jeopardise the offer of a place at the parents preferred school.

Applying online is simple and the applicant will get an instant email acknowledgement that the application has been received. If the applicant does not have internet access, it is available for up to two hours free of charge at West Sussex libraries and Children and Family Centres.

Full information regarding making an application, including a school catchment checker, can be found at www.westsussex.gov.uk/admissions.

If you or any parents require further advice, or are unable to apply on line and require a paper form, please phone 033 301 42903.

2. Childcare Sufficiency Assessment

The latest Childcare Sufficiency Assessment has now been published here.

This document sets out the policies and principles of West Sussex County Council (WSCC) to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of childcare places for 0-14 year olds (or up to 18 for children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities) to meet statutory requirements for working parents.

There is a section for each district and borough which includes an area overview of childcare sufficiency, as well as information on new housing developments and area priorities.

3. ***Reminder*** Are you a SEND Champion?

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity. Closing date Thursday 17 January!

Could you be a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) champion for children in your community and wider?

Integrated Prevention and Earliest Help (IPEH) has an exciting opportunity for three Early Years practitioners from each Hub (i.e. District or Borough) to join a SEND Champion programme run by National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) in partnership with West Sussex County Council in 2019. IPEH has funding available to support work focused on improving access and securing sufficient quality 30 hours provision to support children with SEND.

Perhaps you have a project that you want to get off the ground? This could be the support programme you need to get going! See the attached document for more information about the programme and how to apply.

For any queries, or to express your interest, please email free.entitlement@westsussex.gov.uk

4. Update your Termly Childcare Provider Update form today!

Please submit an updated ‘Termly Provider Update’ form on the Online Provider Portal for this term. For support to update your provider details, see page 5 in the online guidance.

Reasons you should submit: it benefits your business!

  • When new businesses or housing developments are proposed in your local area we use your profile and vacancy information to help identify if new early years provision is required. New settings may open unnecessarily if your information is out of date and wrong.
  • Your information helps families find suitable childcare for their children across the county.
  • Free advertisement on our website which has received, on average, just under 10,000 hits a month.

It benefits families:

  • Families call us for help to find childcare that meets their individual needs.
  • One of the biggest complaints the FIS receives from parents is that setting vacancy information is wrong. It wastes their time and is frustrating for parents when searching for childcare. Our information is only as good as the information you can give us.
  • They use our website to find childcare. The details you provide help them to make informed decisions on which providers to contact.

You should provide at least a termly update:

  • Update, even if you’re full. Updating is about more than just free advertising. Out of date information can directly affect your business.
  • If you have not updated your details in the last year we remove you from our public list. This is to prevent a breach to the data protection policy, which you agree to when submitting your profile update.

The Early Education and Childcare statutory guidance (March 2017) requires local authorities to update setting information at least once a term.
