Contract agreed to expand electric vehicle support
We'll work with Believ to set up a comprehensive and inclusive chargepoint network by 2030, which will be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.
The Department for Transport will contribute £264,000 through LEVI funding while Believ will invest £2.83 million and will install, operate and maintain the network.
Most chargepoints will be at the kerbside for long-stay or overnight use, with some rapid or ultra-rapid units in public car parks for faster top-ups.
They should all be installed within the second year of the contract, mostly in places where households would find it difficult to set up a charger.
Network relaunched to help children and families
The network provides updates on local events and services through its regular newsletter and manages the borough’s children’s disability register. This register helps us plan future services more effectively.
As part of the relaunch, the CAN Card has been refreshed with a new design and improved accessibility.
It serves as a photo ID and proof of disability, accepted by many local attractions for concessions and free carer tickets. Existing cards remain valid until expiry.
Families can now apply online for the register, requiring a photo and proof of diagnosis. Businesses can get in touch if they wish to offer a discount or concession for CAN card holders.
Get fit and get round at the same time
We're pleased to be offering more weekly running sessions to help people build their fitness and travel around the borough while squeezing in some exercise.
Our previous My Way to 5K scheme, supported by our My Journey Wokingham team and run by Places Leisure, was so successful that we couldn't take everyone who wanted to give it a go.
We don't want anyone to feel left out, so we're looking to run them again and want you to let us know what the most convenient times and days are.
They'll offer a friendly and gentle way to build up to running 5km, with adult sessions at Arborfield Green, Woodley (Bulmershe) and Ryeish Green, plus a family session (age 11 and over) at Arborfield Green.
If you respond to the survey, you can sign up for alerts once the final dates and times are confirmed.
Gym memberships to support healthy recovery
A charity team has made a splash to fundraise for Cranstoun, helping fund gym and swimming memberships to support residents in recovery.
The team joined the Wokingham Lions’ Swimathon at Wokingham Leisure Centre earlier this month. They completed a relay, undertaking 60 laps in 50 minutes, raising just over £1,000 for the cause. This will be matched by Places Leisure, bringing the total to more than £2,000.
Cranstoun helps people in the borough facing alcohol and drugs recovery, domestic abuse, housing issues and those in contact with the criminal justice system.
The money will be used to fund around two dozen 12-week gym memberships for the charity’s drug and alcohol clients.
A client helped by the initiative last year, said: “The gym and swimming membership helped me so much. It changed my quality of life, and I was swimming every day and going to classes and realised I can get a natural high from exercise instead of the horrid drugs which were destroying me.”
Cranstoun hopes to offer the memberships to its clients next month.
