Say 'I do' at Shute End
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Burton who recently got married in the Wokingham Ceremony Room at our Civic Offices in Shute End.
The happy couple were pleasantly surprised when a family member arranged for a horse drawn carriage to collect them after their wedding ceremony. We would like to wish Mr and Mrs Burton a very happy life together.
If you are engaged or looking to get married, you can plan your wedding or civil partnership ceremony with us. Our wonderful Registrars Team can help you make your ceremony as individual as you are.
Safety treatments to start across borough
This is a cost-effective alternative to resurfacing and is useful when the top layer of a road starts wearing away, which isn’t always dangerous but can eventually become a hazard.
Our partners at Volker Highways have almost finished patching the carriageway at each location, which is needed before surface dressing can begin.
They apply layers of bitumen and stone chippings to the carriageway and roll them in, before the road is reopened for traffic to further press the chippings.
The road is then protected from further damage for up to 10 years and it helps us save money for areas that need resurfacing the most.
 29 welcomed in citizenship ceremony
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Carol Jewell has welcomed 29 new citizens to the borough.
Each new citizen was welcomed with a certificate and passport holder as a gift.
The ceremony is the final step to becoming a British citizen and formally welcomes a person into their local community.
Improving homes for people in care
Two homes in Woodley and Wokingham have been modernised for people supported by Optalis Community Living Services.
Both were refurbished alongside the five people who are now living there, meaning it meets their needs and makes a difference to their everyday lives.
These changes have helped create spaces where people can live with independence and a real sense of belonging.
In both homes, people live alongside others with shared interests, building new friendships and enjoying fuller, more connected lives.
Writing competition to protect the planet
We’re inviting young writers across Wokingham Borough to take part in our Protect Our Planet Writing Competition - a chance to share their thoughts, stories or poems about protecting the environment.
Whether it’s a tale about a recycling robot, a poem about the ocean or a reflection on how we can all do our bit, we’d love to hear their ideas.
There are prizes from the Natural History Museum, and winning entries may be shared to help inspire others.
There are three age categories: four to seven years, eight to 11 years and 11+ years.
To enter, just send your writing along with your name and age to libraryevents@wokingham.gov.uk, or drop it off at your local Wokingham Borough library by 31 August.
